RITES prepares Hyderabad–Chennai Bullet Train feasibility study with advanced tech

RITES Limited is preparing the feasibility study for the Hyderabad–Chennai High-Speed Rail Corridor, which is the first step towards South India’s bullet train project. The company is working on the traffic analysis, demand forecasts, alignment surveys, topographical studies and Detailed Project Report. The project aims to reduce the travel time from 12 hours to 2 hours 20 minutes, which in term will improve the traveling journey of the passengers.


Introduction:

The visionary plan to connect Hyderabad and Chennai with a high-speed bullet train is advancing rapidly, with RITES Limited working on the feasibility study and preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR). Once operational, the corridor will redefine Southern India’s transport ecosystem by cutting down travel time from nearly half a day to just over two hours.

Background:

In March 2025, RITES Limited won a contract worth Rs. 27.96 crore from South Central Railway for conducting the Final Location Survey (FLS) of two high-speed elevated rail corridors: Hyderabad–Bengaluru and Hyderabad–Chennai. This survey forms the backbone of the DPR, which will define project alignment, cost estimates, and technical feasibility.

Scope of Work:

RITES’ mandate is extensive, covering:

  • Traffic analysis and demand forecasts to establish passenger volumes.
  • Final alignment design using modern survey methods.
  • Topographical and geotechnical studies for accuracy.
  • Preparation of DPR and EPC documentation for execution readiness.
  • ROR calculations and detailed estimates to support financial planning.

The use of Airborne and Terrestrial LIDAR technology will allow precise data collection, minimising errors and enabling faster decision-making.

The Hyderabad–Chennai high-speed rail corridor is designed to cut the 12-hour journey down to just 2 hours 20 minutes.
