Pune Metro: Swargate–Katraj Metro extension of Rs. 2,954 crore sanctioned, targeted for completion by 2029

In a major stride towards development of Pune’s urban mobility system, the Swargate to Katraj section, extension of Pune Metro Phase-1 got approved by the Union cabinet. The project worth Rs. 2,954.53 crore, aims to reduce congestion, improve connectivity, and provide sustainable mobility solutions. This will be executed by Maha-Metro and targeted to be completed by February 2029.


Introduction:

Pune’s metro expansion has gained fresh momentum as the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the long-awaited underground extension of Phase-1 from Swargate to Katraj. This transformative project, spanning 5.46 km and costing Rs. 2,954.53 crore, is expected to be operational by February 2029.

Project Highlights:

  • Route: Swargate to Katraj (Underground Line – Phase 1B Extension).
  • Length: 5.46 km.
  • Stations: Market Yard, Bibwewadi, Balaji Nagar.
  • Implementing Agency: Maha-Metro.
  • Estimated Cost: Rs. 2,954.53 crore.
  • Funding Model: Joint contributions by the Government of India, Government of Maharashtra, and bilateral agencies.
  • Completion Deadline: February 2029.

Connectivity Benefits:

This extension will integrate with the Swargate Multimodal Hub, which combines the metro station, MSRTC Bus Stand, and PMPML Bus Stand. The seamless connectivity is designed to reduce travel time across the city and strengthen intermodal transport options.

The new line will particularly serve commuters from the southern suburbs of Pune by linking them directly to the city’s northern, eastern, and western regions through the District Court interchange station.

Alleviating Congestion & Enhancing Safety:

Pune has long struggled with growing vehicular congestion and pollution. The Swargate–Katraj line aims to provide:

  • Reduced Road Congestion: Offering a reliable alternative to private vehicles.
  • Safer Travel: Lower risk of accidents compared to road transport.
  • Environmental Benefits: Reduction in pollution through a sustainable public transport option.
  • Comfort & Speed: Faster, more economical travel for daily commuters.

Socio-Economic Impact:

The corridor will connect vital city hubs including:

  • Educational Institutions & Colleges: Helping students with affordable, timely commutes.
  • Residential & Commercial Areas: Facilitating mobility for working professionals and small business owners.
  • Recreational & Cultural Spots: Improved access to Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, Taljai hillock, shopping malls, and markets.

According to projections, daily ridership on the Swargate–Katraj line is expected to be:

  • 2027: 95,000 passengers
  • 2037: 1.58 lakh passengers
  • 2047: 1.87 lakh passengers
  • 2057: 1.97 lakh passengers

Execution & Timelines:

Maha-Metro will oversee execution of civil, electro-mechanical, and allied works. Pre-bid activities are underway, and tender documents are being prepared. Contracts for various packages are expected to be floated soon.

This metro extension is more than a transport upgrade—it is a strategic investment in Pune’s future growth. By offering efficient urban mobility, it will:
