NHSRCL completes 9th steel bridge in Gujarat for the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project

The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited successfully completed another steel bridge over NH-48 near Nadiad in Gujarat. The second 100 m span of a 200 m long steel bridge has been finally constructed, completing the 9th bridge out of 17 planned steel bridges in the state. This is a steady development towards the completion of the MAHSR corridor.

Introduction:

In a significant step, NHSRCL has completed the second 100 m span of a 200 m long steel bridge over the NH-48 (connecting Delhi, Mumbai & Chennai) near Nadiad, Gujarat, for the Bullet Train Project. This development is a testament of the organization’s engineering precision and the coordination of the workforce. In April 2025 the first span of 100 m for this steel bridge was completed.

Details of the Bridge:

The 14.6 meters tall bridge with a width of 14.3 meters, was manufactured at the workshop in Salazar, near Hapur, Uttar Pradesh, designed to have a lifespan of 100 years. The bridge comprises two steel spans of 100 m each, weighing around 2884 metric tons is a significant boost to the pace of the Bullet train project.

Traffic management during Launch:

NH-48 is one of the busiest six-lane highways, to ensure smooth traffic flow on the busy highway, the launch was carried out by sliding the span for 100 m from one end, across the three lanes, thereby minimizing disruption to road users.

Bridge specifications:

The bridge is 200 m long, constructed with approximately 1,14,172 Tor-Shear Type High Strength (TTHS) bolts, C5 system painting, and elastomeric bearings.

Assembly Method:

It was assembled on temporary trestles at a height of 14.9 meters above the ground and was moved using an automatic mechanism with two semi-automatic jacks, each capable of lifting 250 tons, with mac-alloy bars.

Update on Bullet Train Project:

Out of all the 28 steel bridges planned for the entire corridor, 11 steel bridges are in Maharashtra and 17 are in Gujarat. The recently completed bridge near Nadiad, Gujarat is the ninth steel bridge out of the planned 17 steel bridges in the state.

Details of completed steel bridges in Gujarat:

Sr. No. Location Length of the steel bridge (in meters) Weight of the steel bridge (in MT)
1 Across National Highway 53, Surat 70 673
2 Over Vadodara-Ahmedabad main line of Indian Railways, near Nadiad 100 1486

9 Over NH-48, near Nadiad 2 × 100 2884

Conclusion:

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project will enhance ease of travel as well as transform urban mobility. The elevated overpass through Ahmedabad symbolizes seamless connectivity and faster, smoother journeys in the future along the high-speed rail corridor. The development is a significant achievement for the first high-speed rail corridor between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
