Chennai Metro Rail Limited has inked a contract with the Sri Radha Constructions to build a new entry/exit structure at OTA Nanganallur Road Metro Station. The project worth Rs. 8.52 crore aims to significantly reduce congestion, improve commuter travelling journey and boost connectivity on the GST Road.
Introduction:
In a significant step towards reinforcing urban transit connectivity, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has officially signed a contract for construction of an entry and exit structure at OTA Nanganallur Road Metro Station. The existing entrance of the station has limited accessibility and often deals with congestion. The new entry on the Officers Training Academy (OTA) side will ease commuter travel and better connectivity on the both sides of GST Road.
Contract Signing and Stakeholders:
The contract has been awarded to Sri Radha Constructions for a value of Rs. 8.52 crore. The Letter of Acceptance (LoA) was issued on July 30, 2025. The official agreement was signed in the presence of Shri T. Archunan, Director (Projects), CMRL.
Signing on behalf of CMRL was Shri T. Livingstone Eliazer, CGM – PP & D, while Shri S. Vinoth Ragavendran, Managing Partner, represented the contractor. The occasion was also attended by senior officials, including Dr. D. Jebaselwin Gladson (CGM – CP & M), highlighting the importance of this milestone for Chennai’s metro development.
Project Significance:
The construction of this new entry/exit structure is more than a civil engineering project; it is a direct response to the growing demands of urban mobility. Key benefits include:
- Enhanced Accessibility: Commuters from the OTA and GST Road side will have seamless access to the metro network.
- Reduced Congestion: The additional entry point will help ease overcrowding, particularly during peak hours.
- Improved Connectivity: Surrounding residential neighborhoods, educational institutions, and commercial hubs will enjoy better linkage to the metro system.
- Passenger Convenience: By decentralizing entry points, travel experience will be safer and more efficient for daily users.
Boost to Urban Infrastructure:
Chennai Metro has been consistently expanding and upgrading its facilities to meet the rising demand of one of India’s fastest-growing metropolitan regions. This project demonstrates CMRL’s commitment to:
- Promoting last-mile connectivity for smoother commuter transition.
- Reducing travel delays and ensuring time efficiency for passengers.
- Supporting inclusive urban mobility, making metro travel accessible for diverse commuter groups.
The initiative is also in line with CMRL’s larger vision of building a metro system that is sustainable, user-friendly, and future-ready.
Broader Impact:
The additional entry at Nanganallur Road Metro Station is expected to significantly benefit thousands of daily commuters. With the station strategically located along the GST Road corridor, the project will bridge a critical gap in accessibility. It will also encourage more people to shift towards public transport, easing road traffic and reducing the city’s carbon footprint.
Conclusion:
The signing of the order for the new entry/exit at OTA Nanganallur Road Metro Station is a crucial move in Chennai’s path towards smarter urban mobility. Emphasising on accessibility, lowering congestion, and accelerating passenger convenience, CMRL reinforces its effort to build a smart, efficient, and green metro rail system.
