The Kanpur Metro project continues to make significant progress with the recent launch of the ‘Azad’ tunnel boring machine from a cut-and-cover shaft near Swadeshi Cotton Mill. This machine will construct the final 2.4 km stretch of the tunnel leading up to Kanpur Central.
More Details:
Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) advanced the Kanpur Metro project with the launch of the ‘Azad’ tunnel boring machine from a cut-and-cover shaft near Swadeshi Cotton Mill. This machine will construct the final 2.4 km stretch of the tunnel up to Kanpur Central. This crucial segment is part of Corridor-1, which extends from IIT Kanpur to Naubasta, and represents a significant step towards enhancing urban transit in the city.
The Alignment of Corridor -1 is Described in Detail in Following Sub-Sections:
- IIT Kanpur – Moti Jheel Section
- Switch Over Ramp from Elevated to Underground
- Chunniganj to Transport Nagar
- Switch Over Ramp from Underground to Elevated
- Baradevi Chauraha to Naubasta
TBM Azad will work for this section: Chunniganj to Transport Nagar:
- This section is Underground consisting of a total of 8 nos. underground stations namely, Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha, Phoolbagh, Nayaganj, Kanpur Central, Jhakarkati and Transport Nagar Station.
- All the stations have been proposed by Cut & Cover station except Nayaganj station which has been proposed by NATM.
Recent Progress:
In June: Kanpur Metro commenced track construction work in the ramp area connecting Motijheel Station to the underground section. Shri Sushil Kumar, Managing Director of Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (UPMRC), conducted an inspection of the underground stations and reviewed the progress of the construction work. This development marks a significant step forward in the Kanpur Metro project, aimed at enhancing urban connectivity and easing transportation in the city. Read Here
In June: Kanpur Metro reached a significant milestone under Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC), with the completion of the second tunnel in the 4.24 km long Kanpur Central-Transport Nagar underground section. The ‘Vidyarthi’ Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) achieved a breakthrough by successfully constructing approximately 1250 metres of the ‘down line’ tunnel from Kanpur Central to Nayaganj. This development marks a crucial step forward in the ongoing expansion of the Kanpur Metro network. Read Here
In June: Kanpur Metro achieved another significant milestone with the installation of a steel box girder at Naubasta crossing for the viaduct construction. This vital structure connects Kidwai Nagar to Vasant Vihar station. The first segment of both girders has been successfully erected. Spanning 45 metres, the structure will cross the Delhi-Kolkata Highway without the need for pillars, showcasing impressive engineering and design. Read Here
Conclusion:
The successful deployment of the ‘Azad’ tunnel boring machine marks a pivotal advancement in the Kanpur Metro project, bringing the city closer to a more efficient and modern public transportation system.
