The Union Budget 2025 allocated Rs. 2.65 lakh crore for Railway sector for Fiscal Year 2025-26.

The Railways Budget for FY 2025-26 stands at Rs. 2,52,000 crore, with an additional Rs. 10,000 crore from extra budgetary resources, bringing the total Capex to Rs. 2,62,000 crore. This will fund asset acquisition, construction, and modernization through Gross Budgetary Support, General Revenues, and safety funds. A Rs. 200 crore Nirbhaya Fund provision is included, while Railways aims to raise Rs. 3,000 crore from internal resources, making it the total Rs. 2,65,200 crore.

The highlights of the Rail Budget as announced on 1st February 2025 are as under :

Indian Railways will enhance travel with 200 Vande Bharat trains, 100 Amrit Bharat trains, and 50 Namo Bharat rapid rail services in the next 2–3 years. Additionally, 17,500 general non-AC coaches will be introduced to improve accessibility and passenger comfort.

Railways is set to become the world’s second-largest freight carrier, targeting 1.6 billion tonnes of cargo by the end of this fiscal year, strengthening logistics and boosting economic growth.

Indian Railways plans a 7,000 km high-speed rail network by 2047, enabling trains to run at 250 km per hour, simultaneously, it targets to achieve 100% electrification by the end of FY 2025-26.
