TERRATEC TBM ‘Kolli’ achieves breakthrough at Otteri Station for Chennai Metro Phase-2

TERRATEC TBM S81B “Kolli” achieves its first breakthrough at Otteri Station, advancing Chennai Metro Phase-II Corridor 3. Launched from Ayanavaram Station, it completed 903m of tunnelling, marking a milestone in the 9 km twin-tunnel construction. TERRATEC’s TBMs are pivotal in delivering efficient transportation solutions across the Chennai Metro network.

Introduction to Breakthrough:

TERRATEC TBM S81B “Kolli” marked a significant achievement by breaking through at Otteri Station as part of the 116.1 km Chennai Metro Rail Phase-II Corridor 3 project. This event, attended by CMRL and Tata Projects representatives, marks progress in the construction of critical underground sections.

Role of TBMs in the Project:

TBM “Kolli,” along with six other TBMs, is key to constructing the 9 km twin tunnels for Corridor-3. Launched in July 2023, the TBM completed its breakthrough after 13 months, excavating 903m. TERRATEC has supplied five TBMs for the project, demonstrating its contribution to the project’s success.

Achievements of Other TBMs:

Other TERRATEC TBMs have also celebrated breakthroughs: TBM S96 at Madhavaran High Road, TBM S98 at Venugopal Nagar Station and Otteri Station, and TBM S99 at Venugopal Nagar. These milestones reflect the progress of the Chennai Metro Phase-II project.

Scope and Complexity of the Project:

The project involves constructing diaphragm walls and entry/exit structures for various stations, along with launch and retrieval shafts. The challenging task of tunneling beneath historical structures in densely populated areas adds complexity to the project.

Technical Aspects of TERRATEC TBMs:

TERRATEC’s TBMs feature dome-style cutterheads for mixed-ground conditions and install universal reinforced concrete lining rings. The advanced design and constant on-site support by TERRATEC’s specialists ensure the project’s efficiency and success.

Significance of Chennai Metro Phase-II:

The Chennai Metro Rail Project aims to address the city’s rapid growth and traffic congestion by providing a modern public transport solution. The timely execution of Phase-II is critical for connecting vital areas and offering efficient travel to residents.

TERRATEC’s Track Record in India:

TERRATEC has been a reliable provider of TBMs across India, contributing to projects like the Delhi Metro and Mumbai Metro. The company’s expertise and after-sales support ensure seamless tunnelling and project completion, now being leveraged for Chennai Metro Phase-II.

Conclusion:

TERRATEC’s successful breakthrough with TBM “Kolli” at Otteri Station signifies an important milestone for the Chennai Metro Phase-II project. The company’s state-of-the-art TBMs and dedicated support are crucial for timely project delivery, providing efficient and modern transportation for Chennai’s growing urban landscape.
