Shri Vilas Sopan Wadekar has been appointed as the Chairman and Managing Director of Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC), succeeding Shri Subhash Chand Gupta. A 1991 batch Indian Railway Service of Engineers officer, Shri Wadekar brings over three decades of expertise in railway infrastructure and suburban network development to his new leadership role.
Proven Leadership and Technical Expertise:
Recognized for his exceptional technical expertise, Shri Wadekar was empanelled as a Joint Secretary to the Government of India in 2019. With over 15 years of experience in Mumbai’s suburban railway network, he has played a crucial role in planning and executing large-scale infrastructure projects, including civil, electrical, and signalling works. His leadership is expected to drive MRVC’s mission of modernizing Mumbai’s suburban rail network and enhancing commuter services.
Key Projects Led by Shri Wadekar:
- Thane-Diva 5th & 6th Line: Addressing a critical gap in the suburban railway network.
- Udhana-Jalgaon Doubling with Electrification: Improving rail connectivity and network capacity.
- Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-III): Led planning, design, and approvals, securing vital forest clearances for the Virar-Dahanu Quadrupling and Borivali-Virar 5th & 6th Line projects.
- Trespass Control Works: Implemented at 12 suburban stations under MUTP-2A, enhancing commuter safety.
- Turbhe-Nerul Trans Harbour Line: Strengthening direct rail connectivity between Thane and Panvel.
Academic and Professional Achievements:
Shri Wadekar is an alumnus of Amravati University, where he secured the top rank across all Civil Engineering branches and was awarded three gold medals. He also holds a Master’s degree in Civil-Structural Engineering with first-class distinction. With over three decades of experience in railway project planning, procurement, operations, and administration, his contributions to Indian Railways and its Public Sector Undertakings have been instrumental in shaping key infrastructure projects.
