Taking the Patna Metro rail project a step further towards completion, TBM-1 starts its second tunnelling journey from Patna University towards Gandhi Maidan metro station. The TBM will construct a 2303 metre tunnel on the ‘downline’ in Corridor-2 of Phase-I project.

The process of lowering of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) -1 in the Corridor -2 of the Patna Metro Rail Project has been successfully done. With this the first tunnel boring machine has been launched for its second journey of tunnelling works. Operating within the Corridor-2 line section between ISBT station and Patna Junction, as part of Phase- I construction this TBM machine will construct a 2302 metre long tunnel on the ‘downline’ from Patna University metro station to Gandhi maidan via PMCH station.
Recent Progress of the Project:
- It is to be noted that in a significant achievement TBM -1 achieved its breakthrough at Patna University metro station on 20th March, was retrieved on 13th May and was lowered in the shaft on 24th May, 2024 for its second journey from Patna University towards Gandhi maidan metro station via PMCH station.
- After which the tunnelling work commenced here on Tuesday from PU towards Gandhi maidan metro station.
- Covering a distance of 1494 metres between Moin Ul Haq Stadium station and University station, the TBM completed its journey in 10 months, culminating in a breakthrough. The entire TBM was retrieved at Patna University by mega load setup.
- Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) -2 successfully completed a crucial phase of the Patna Metro project covering a distance of 1480 metres completed its journey in 10 months in the ‘downline’ between Moin Ul Haq Stadium station and University station, culminating in a breakthrough on 14th May at the University metro station.
Using Latest Technology:
- Equipped with a state-of-the-art computerised navigation system, TBM -1 will dig an average of 10 m per day.
- The TBMs are piloted by a highly trained specialist crew who will work around the clock while the tunnels are being built to with almost no disturbance above ground for traffic, businesses and residents.

The start of TBM-1’s second journey marks further progress of the much awaited Patna Metro rail project. The development shows steady and timely progress of the project by using the latest technology and at the same time ensuring minimal disruption to the traffic system.
