The Kanpur Metro project spearheaded by UPMRC takes a major leap forward as the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) approved commercial operations on the 7 km stretch from Moti Jheel to Kanpur Central. The extension features five new underground stations and marks a significant milestone in the development of the 23.785 km long Corridor-1.
Corridor-1 Overview:
Corridor-1 spans 23.785 km, beginning slightly before the IIT Kanpur Station and extending till Naubasta. The alignment includes elevated stretches at both ends with an underground section in between. The five main segments of the corridor are:
- IIT Kanpur to Moti Jheel (Elevated – 9 km): Includes 9 elevated stations — IIT Kanpur, Kalyanpur, SPM Hospital, CSJM University, Gurudev Chauraha, Geeta Nagar, Rawatpur, Lala Lajpat Rai, and Moti Jheel. Moti Jheel is developed as a mid-terminal with reversal facilities.
- Switch Over Ramp (Elevated to Underground): Located post Moti Jheel, transitioning towards the underground stretch.
- Chunniganj to Transport Nagar (Underground): Forms the core of the corridor’s central segment, ensuring seamless passage through densely populated areas.
- Switch Over Ramp (Underground to Elevated): Located near Baradevi, transitioning back to the elevated structure.
- Baradevi Chauraha to Naubasta (Elevated): Includes Naubasta Metro Station, the southern terminal with planned stabling and minor depot facilities.
Recent Updates on Kanpur Metro:
The Kanpur Metro project takes a significant step forward as TBM ‘Saraswati’ is launched from Rawatpur, marking the start of tunnel construction on the ‘downline’ of the 4.10 km underground section of Corridor-2 (CSA to Barra-8). MD Shri Sushil Kumar of UPMRC presided over the launch, reinforcing project momentum.
The Kanpur Metro project advances as tunnel construction is set to begin on the 4.10 km ‘downline’ of the Rawatpur-Double Pulia underground section under Corridor-2 (CSA–Barra-8). The sixth Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) has been successfully lowered at Rawatpur, marking a crucial step in expanding urban connectivity and enhancing public transport efficiency.
Conclusion:
With CMRS clearance now in place, passenger services on the Moti Jheel to Kanpur Central underground section are expected to begin soon. This expansion will enhance urban mobility, reduce road congestion, and bring seamless connectivity for daily commuters—further strengthening Kanpur’s transformation into a modern, transit-oriented city.
