The Kanpur Metro Corridor-2 has achieved a significant milestone with TBM ‘Gomti’ completing the first tunnel on the Up-Line, spanning 620 meters from Rawatpur Station to Company Bagh. Rawatpur is planned as an interchange station for Corridor-1 and 2, blending elevated and underground structures to ensure seamless future connectivity.
TBM ‘Gomti’ Completes First Tunnel on Kanpur Metro Corridor-2:
Managing Director Shri Sushil Kumar recently reviewed the progress of stations under construction along the route. Rawatpur Station is planned as an interchange station, integrating Corridors 1 and 2. The station design incorporates both elevated and underground structures. The elevated section, part of Corridor-1, will be built first, featuring a special span configuration (34m + 45m + 34m) using the cantilever construction method to accommodate future underground work without disrupting train operations. Alternatively, a steel span of 45m may also be implemented for flexibility.
Corridor-2 Overview:
- Stretching 8.6 kilometers, Corridor-2 of Kanpur Metro includes 3.977 kilometers of elevated track, a transition ramp, and 4.623 kilometers underground.
- The corridor comprises nine stations, with four underground and five elevated, to enhance urban mobility and accessibility across key parts of Kanpur.
Alignment Details:
- Starting at Agriculture University, the Corridor-2 alignment runs south along VIP Road, connecting significant locations like the UPSRTC workshop, Mathura–Kanpur railway tracks, and R.S. Puram.
- It culminates at Rawatpur, which serves as a crucial integration point for future northward extensions and seamless connectivity with Corridor-1.
Conclusion:
The successful completion of the first tunnel on Corridor-2 demonstrates Kanpur Metro’s commitment to efficient urban transport. With strategic station designs and innovative construction techniques, the project ensures future-ready infrastructure that minimizes disruption. This milestone paves the way for seamless integration of Corridors 1 and 2, transforming Kanpur’s public transport landscape.
