Shri Janak Kumar Garg, CMRS, recently conducted a key inspection of the metro stretch from Moti Jheel to Kanpur Central under Corridor-1 (IIT – Naubasta) of Kanpur Metro. Senior UPMRC officials were present during the whole inspection. After the grant of a No Objection Certificate (NOC) passenger services are expected to begin on this section soon.
Introduction:
The Kanpur Metro project progressing at steady pace under UPMRC, recently Shri Janak Kumar Garg, Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) inspected the metro corridor stretch between Moti Jheel and Kanpur Central Station, a key segment of Corridor-1. Passenger services are set to commence soon on this stretch, marking a significant milestone in expanding Kanpur Metro’s operations and urban mobility.
Corridor-1 Overview:
Corridor-1 spans 23.785 km, beginning slightly before the IIT Kanpur Station and extending till Naubasta. The alignment includes elevated stretches at both ends with an underground section in between. The five main segments of the corridor are:
- IIT Kanpur to Moti Jheel (Elevated – 9 km): Includes 9 elevated stations — IIT Kanpur, Kalyanpur, SPM Hospital, CSJM University, Gurudev Chauraha, Geeta Nagar, Rawatpur, Lala Lajpat Rai, and Moti Jheel. Moti Jheel is developed as a mid-terminal with reversal facilities.
- Switch Over Ramp (Elevated to Underground): Located post Moti Jheel, transitioning towards the underground stretch.
- Chunniganj to Transport Nagar (Underground): Forms the core of the corridor’s central segment, ensuring seamless passage through densely populated areas.
- Switch Over Ramp (Underground to Elevated): Located near Baradevi, transitioning back to the elevated structure.
- Baradevi Chauraha to Naubasta (Elevated): Includes Naubasta Metro Station, the southern terminal with planned stabling and minor depot facilities.
IIT Kanpur Station: Serving as the northern terminal, it’s fully elevated with two stabling lines accommodating up to four rakes, with connectivity to IIT and Kalyanpur region.
Naubasta Station: The southern terminal with stabling space and a 6.75 Ha depot area on Housing Board land. It will cater to residents of Rajendra Nagar, KDA Colony, and Naubasta.
The partially underground stretch between Kanpur Central and Naubasta, including ramp-ups and depot arrangements, ensures smooth operational transition and logistical support.
Conclusion:
With CMRS inspection completed, the Kanpur Metro Corridor-1 extension is nearing operational readiness. Once the NOC is granted, the Moti Jheel to Kanpur Central stretch will open for public use, enhancing intra-city transit. The entire IIT to Naubasta corridor stands as a key pillar of Kanpur’s modern urban infrastructure.
