The awarded contract includes:
- Construction of Major Bridges (66, 72 & 78)
- Road Over Bridge (ROB) at Vasai
- Vehicle Subway (71)
- Minor Bridges (79, 79A)
- Drainage Work (CH: 54836 to CH: 55336)

Significance of the 5th & 6th Rail Line:
- The Borivali-Virar stretch is a crucial segment in Mumbai’s suburban railway network. While Mumbai Central to Borivali already has five lines, Borivali to Virar currently operates with only four.
- The addition of the 5th and 6th lines will streamline suburban and non-suburban train operations, facilitating dedicated corridors for both slow and fast services.
- This segregation aims to enhance rail capacity, reduce congestion, and improve connectivity for millions of daily commuters.
MUTP-3A: Transforming Mumbai’s Rail Infrastructure:
The Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) Phase IIIA, worth Rs. 33,690 crore, is a critical initiative aimed at strengthening and expanding the Mumbai Suburban Railway System. The Borivali-Virar 5th & 6th line project, valued at approximately Rs. 2,184 crore, is an integral component of this massive infrastructure boost.
With Mumbai’s Metropolitan Region (MMR) expanding rapidly, improving suburban rail connectivity is essential to accommodate the city’s future transport demands. MUTP-3A is designed to enhance both capacity and safety, ensuring a robust, efficient, and modernized suburban rail system.
Conclusion:
The J. Kumar Infraprojects contract marks a significant milestone in Mumbai’s rail infrastructure expansion under MUTP-3A. The 5th & 6th line between Borivali and Virar will decongest existing routes, improve service frequency, and provide a dedicated corridor for suburban trains, ensuring a smoother and more reliable commute for Mumbai’s growing population.
