Hyderabad Metro’s Green Line extension reaches the Old City, improving connectivity in the region

Hyderabad Metro’s long-awaited Green Line extension to the Old City has officially started. The 7.5-km section from MGBS to Chandrayangutta will connect key heritage areas like Shalibanda and Falaknuma, promoting faster travel, modern infrastructure, and better airport access for the daily commuters.

Introduction:

The long-delayed Hyderabad Metro Green Line extension has been launched, connecting Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) to Chandrayangutta. This long-overdue development is set to link the historically rich Old City with the rest of Hyderabad’s growing metro network.

Areas Covered in Phase-2 Expansion:

The 7.5-kilometre elevated corridor will pass through Shalibanda, Falaknuma, and Chandrayangutta — densely populated areas with cultural and commercial importance. This will be a game-changer for local commuters and businesses alike.

Ongoing Works and Infrastructure Preparation:

  • Demolition and road widening efforts are underway on Mir Alam Mandi Road near Charminar to facilitate Metro construction.
  • Metro pillars and stations will soon rise across key Old City zones, bringing new infrastructure to the region.

Compensation and Property Acquisition:

A significant milestone in the project is the distribution of compensation to affected property owners. In the first phase, Rs. 20 crore has already been disbursed among 41 owners. A total of Rs. 1,000 crore is earmarked to acquire over 1,100 properties.

Heritage Preservation Measures:

To ensure the city’s heritage remains intact, the Metro’s alignment has been thoughtfully designed to avoid impacting iconic landmarks such as the Charminar and other historic structures. Authorities are taking a sensitive, balanced approach to development.

MD Stated:

Mr. NVS Reddy, Managing Director of Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML), said “This expansion for the Old City is long overdue and is a crucial step in integrating this historic area with Hyderabad’s modern public transportation system”. The works are going to roll ahead in full swing.

Impact on Daily Commuting and Airport Access:

  • The Metro expansion will drastically cut commute times and ease congestion.
  • For Old City residents, it will also enable direct and faster access to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, improving connectivity across economic and social layers.

Conclusion:

The Old City’s long wait for modern transit is ending. As Metro pillars rise and connectivity expands, Hyderabad is blending progress with preservation. This milestone is more than a construction update—it’s a commitment to inclusive urban development that honors heritage while embracing the future.
