Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) and Tata Projects Limited (TPL) have won a Rs. 2,191 crore contract for Indore Metro’s first underground corridor. The contract, issued by Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL), covers construction of an 8.65 km-long underground corridor, including tunnels and stations. HCC holds a 55% stake, further strengthening its metro construction expertise across India’s urban transit landscape.
Scope of Work:
The awarded contract, designated as Package IN-05R, is the first and only underground section in Indore Metro’s 31.32 km-long Phase 1 project. This package includes the construction of a 11.32 km-long twin tunnel using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) and the development of seven underground metro stations at:
- Indore Railway Station, Rajwada, Chota Ganpati, Bada Ganpati, Ramchandra Nagar, BSF/Kalani Nagar, Airport Station.
- The project will connect the metro corridor via ramps located east of Indore Railway Station and west of Airport Station.
Key Construction Elements:
- Twin bored tunnels built using shield TBMs.
- Cross passages with sumps for safety and maintenance.
- TBM shafts strategically planned for soil/rock strata.
- Cut & Cover sections for seamless transitions.
- Tunnel fire detection & suppression systems ensuring safety.
- Ventilation and exhaust systems, including over-track and under-platform ducts.
- Emergency walkways and tunnel maintenance paths.
The JV will design and construct seven underground stations with associated structures such as entry-exit points, subways, emergency exits, and ventilation shafts. Key civil and structural components include:
- Station boxes, including slabs, walls, and staircases.
- Operational control rooms, pump houses, HVAC, and generator enclosures.
- Utilities and service shafts for smooth metro operations.
HCC’s Metro Expansion Legacy:
HCC has an extensive portfolio in India’s metro sector, having contributed to major projects like Delhi Metro, Bangalore Metro, Kolkata Metro, and Mumbai Metro Line 1. The company is currently involved in Mumbai Metro Line III and two Chennai Metro projects. This new contract further cements its expertise in delivering large-scale underground transit infrastructure.
