HBL Engineering wins Rs. 1,522 crore order from CLW for Kavach deployment on locomotives

HBL Engineering Limited has received a Rs. 1,522.40 crore order from Chittaranjan Locomotive Works for the supply, installation, and commissioning of Kavach, India’s indigenously developed Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), on 2,200 locomotives. The project, aimed at enhancing rail safety and operational efficiency, will be completed within a tight 12-month timeline.

Project Overview:

Kavach, an Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system developed indigenously by HBL for Indian Railways, is designed to prevent collisions, enhance train protection, and ensure operational safety. The system employs advanced real-time situational awareness and algorithms to predict and mitigate potential hazards.

Key Features of Kavach:

  • On-board display of signal aspects.
  • Enforcement of temporary and permanent speed restrictions.
  • Prevention of Signal Passing At Danger (SPAD).
  • Train integrity monitoring.

Safety and Cost Efficiency:

Certified to SIL4 standards by European auditors, Kavach offers robust safety features while significantly reducing costs compared to international technologies like ERTMS. This makes it ideal for deployment on marginal or unproven lines where cost constraints are critical.

Importance for Indian Railways:

This deployment reflects Indian Railways’ commitment to enhancing safety and operational efficiency on its heavily congested network. Kavach enables running more trains at higher speeds while preventing accidents, boosting capacity utilization, and supporting sustainable rail operations.
