The Union Cabinet has approved the Varanasi-Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya multitracking project worth ₹2,642 crore, aiming to ease congestion on one of Indian Railways‘ busiest routes. The project includes the construction of a rail-cum-road bridge across the Ganga River, boosting connectivity, reducing logistics costs, and promoting sustainable transport solutions.
Key Focus Areas:
- Easing Congestion: This busy stretch plays a vital role in transporting both passengers and freight, including coal, cement, and food grains. The multitracking initiative aims to decongest the route, facilitating smoother operations for both sectors.
- Infrastructure Upgrades: The addition of 3rd and 4th railway lines, as well as a rail-cum-road bridge across the Ganga River, will enhance the region’s connectivity. It also supports the Prime Minister’s vision of self-reliance by boosting employment and economic opportunities in the area.
- Economic and Environmental Benefits: The project aligns with the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan and promises to reduce logistics costs, minimise oil imports, and cut CO2 emissions by 149 crore kg—equivalent to planting 6 crore trees.
Project Scope:
Spanning across Varanasi and Chandauli districts in Uttar Pradesh, the multitracking will extend Indian Railways’ network by approximately 30 kilometres, enabling a more efficient flow of goods and passengers.
Conclusion:
This multitracking initiative, in line with the PM-Gati Shakti plan, not only promises to boost regional socio-economic growth but also reinforces India’s commitment to sustainable development. By minimising logistics costs and emissions, the project will play a crucial role in advancing the nation’s green transportation goals.
