Cabinet approves two railway projects worth Rs. 6,798 crore to boost inter-state connectivity

The Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Modi, has greenlit two significant railway projects estimated at ₹6,798 crore. Covering 313 km across Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, the projects will enhance connectivity, improve freight capacity, reduce emissions, and support the economic growth of 168 villages and 21 lakh people in under-served regions.

Project Details:

  • Doubling of Sections: The Narkatiaganj-Raxaul-Sitamarhi-Darbhanga & Sitamarhi-Muzaffarpur doubling project will span 256 km, facilitating passenger and goods movement, especially to Nepal, Northeast India, and border areas.
  • New Line Construction: The 57-km line between Errupalem and Namburu will improve connectivity across Andhra Pradesh’s NTR Vijayawada, Guntur districts, and Telangana’s Khammam district.

Socio-Economic Impact:

The projects will directly impact around 168 villages and 21 lakh residents across eight districts. The developments are expected to generate 106 lakh human-days of employment, boosting economic activity in regions currently underserved by rail infrastructure.

Environmental and Economic Benefits:

Projected to handle an additional freight capacity of 31 MTPA, the projects will reduce CO₂ emissions by 168 crore kg, the equivalent of planting 7 crore trees. Enhanced connectivity will also lower logistics costs for vital goods like coal, steel, and agriculture products.

Alignment with Government Vision:

These projects support PM Modi’s “Atma Nirbhar Bharat” and “PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan” by promoting sustainable, multimodal connectivity and regional self-sufficiency.

Conclusion:

These transformative projects align with India’s Gati Shakti vision for integrated connectivity. By expanding vital railway infrastructure, they promise reduced congestion, environmental benefits, and a robust boost to regional economies, bringing 21 lakh people closer to a network of opportunities and resources across the three states.
