In a major development, Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) has achieved a landmark by producing 477 locomotives in the financial year 2024-25, marking its highest-ever annual output. This accomplishment highlights BLW’s pivotal role in powering Indian Railways’ infrastructure and modernization efforts.
- 472 electric locomotives were delivered to Indian Railways.
- 5 diesel locomotives were manufactured for domestic clients.
Since its inception, BLW has rolled out 10,687 locomotives, which include 2,367 electric locomotives, strengthening its legacy as a premier locomotive production unit in India.
Significant Milestones in 2024-25:
- January 2025: Set a new record by producing 124 electric loco bogies, surpassing its previous best of 110.
- March 2025: Achieved its highest-ever monthly production of 61 electric locomotives, showcasing unmatched efficiency.
These milestones reaffirm BLW’s commitment to scaling up production capabilities while maintaining top-quality standards.
Focus on Sustainability & Energy Conservation:
- Rainwater Harvesting: Implementation of ponds and soak pits to conserve thousands of liters of rainwater annually.
- Solar Energy: Achieved a 23.25% reduction in grid electricity consumption through maximum utilization of solar power.
In recognition of these efforts, BLW was honored with the Energy Conservation Award by UPNEDA, underscoring its dedication to green initiatives.
Promoting Hindi & Administrative Excellence:
BLW’s commitment goes beyond engineering. On March 20, 2025, it was awarded the prestigious Railway Minister’s Rajbhasha Shield for outstanding work in promoting Hindi in official activities, reflecting its all-round excellence.
Vision for FY 2025-26:
Looking ahead, the Ministry of Railways has set an ambitious target of 500 electric locomotives for BLW in FY 2025-26. General Manager Shri Naresh Pal Singh praised the relentless efforts of BLW’s officers, employees, and women workers, expressing full confidence in achieving the new target.
