Introduction:
In a significant step towards India’s locomotive export capacity, Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW), Varanasi, has dispatched two advanced 3300 horsepower AC-AC diesel-electric locomotives to Mozambique in June 2025. These locomotives form part of a 10-engine export order secured through RITES Ltd. from Mozambique Railways (CFM).
This delivery showcases India’s commitment to global rail infrastructure development under the “Make in India – Make for the World” initiative, highlighting the country’s growing capability in heavy engineering exports.
Contract Background & Previous Success:
Mozambique’s national rail operator, CFM, had received six 3000 HP locomotives from Banaras Locomotive Works between 2021–2023. The timely delivery with perfect engineering of these engines led to another order for 10 upgraded 3300 HP units. The remaining eight locomotives are expected to be delivered till December 2025.
These engines are designed for Cape Gauge (1067 mm) tracks and are capable of reaching speeds of up to 100 km/h—best for freight and mixed-use applications across Mozambique’s developing railway network.
Technical Superiority & Operator-Friendly Features:
Built with state-of-the-art AC-AC traction technology, the new 3300 HP locomotives not only deliver efficiency but are also engineered with the operator in mind. They come equipped with:
- Ergonomically designed cabs
- Refrigerator and hot plate for onboard meals
- Mobile holders and aesthetic control panels
- Integrated toilet facilities
These developments aim to provide a safe, comfortable, and efficient working environment for locomotive drivers—setting new global benchmarks for driver-centric rail design.
Legacy of Export Excellence:
Established on 23 April 1956, Banaras Locomotive Works has produced over 10,000 locomotives till date, serving Indian Railways, ports, mines, steel plants, and various export markets. Its export legacy began with Tanzania in 1976 and has expanded to countries including Vietnam, Angola, Mali, Senegal, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and now, Mozambique.
