Mumbai Metro’s Aqua Line is now inaugurated for commercial operations, connecting Bandra Kurla Complex to Aarey JVLR. Supplied by Alstom, the modern Metropolis train sets and advanced signalling solutions will run on the 33.5 km stretch, enhancing urban mobility. This project will impact over 1.6 million daily commuters in Mumbai.

Alstom’s Role & Contribution:

Alstom has supplied 31 modern, lightweight 8-car metro train sets under one of its biggest contracts in India’s urban rail sector. The trains, built with the theme of Dynamic Fluidism to represent Mumbai’s vibrancy, are designed for high passenger capacity and easy accessibility for differently-abled commuters. This marks Mumbai’s first underground metro and one of the longest continuous underground stretches in India.

Signalling and Technology Features:

The Aqua Line uses state-of-the-art signalling solutions from Alstom, including the CBTC-based Urbalis Forward technology for driverless operations (GOA4 automation), integrated platform screen doors, telecommunication systems, and bi-directional video communication for emergencies.

MD Stated:

Safety & Eco-Friendly Innovations:

These metro train sets are equipped with face-recognition CCTV cameras, smoke detectors, and advanced safety features for passenger security. With 75% motorization for quick transit, regenerative braking systems to reduce carbon emissions, and a recyclable design, the train sets are also environmentally friendly.

‘Make in India’ Initiative & Local Manufacturing:

Designed in Bangalore and manufactured in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, 24 out of the 31 ordered train sets have been delivered so far. This emphasises local production and sustainable urban transport development.

Conclusion:

The inauguration of Mumbai Metro’s Aqua Line represents a major leap in urban transit, enhancing connectivity and easing congestion in the city. Alstom’s Metropolis train sets and advanced signalling technology will provide efficient, sustainable, and safe metro services, marking a milestone for Mumbai’s growing metro network.
