AIIB conducts periodic review and preliminary inspection of Chennai Metro Phase-2

A delegation from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) carried out a periodic review of the ongoing Chennai Metro Phase II project, which it currently funds. The team also inspected the potential support for future corridors including Poonamallee–Parandur and Koyambedu–Avadi, with a focus on multimodal integration and technical feasibility in presence of the CMRL team.


AIIB Conducts Periodic Review of Phase II:

The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has conducted a periodic review mission for the Chennai Metro Phase II project. As part of this mission, the AIIB team held joint inspections with Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) officials to evaluate the current progress and identify future investment opportunities.

Focus on Future Corridors and Multimodal Integration:

During the visit, the AIIB delegation expressed strong interest in supporting further corridors under Phase II. Their preliminary inspections included key locations such as Tambaram and Kilambakkam, with a specific focus on multimodal integration and the technical feasibility of the extensions.

Site Visits to Key Expansion Stretches:

  • The team also conducted site visits along the proposed corridors from Poonamallee to Parandur and Koyambedu to Avadi, two key stretches under consideration for future development. 
  • These corridors are expected to improve regional connectivity and enhance last-mile access through integrated transport solutions.

Senior Officials Join Inspection:

The AIIB delegation comprised Mr. Wenyu Gu (Project Team Leader), Smt. Yi Geng (Senior Financial Management Specialist), Mr. Moohyun Cho (Project Consultant), and Mr. Siva Rama Krishna Sastry Jyosyula (Senior Social Development Specialist). They were accompanied by senior CMRL officials including Mr. T. Archunan (Director, Projects), Smt. Rekha Prakash (Chief General Manager, Planning & Design), and Mr. S. Ashok Kumar (Chief General Manager, Track & Elevated Constructions).

Growing Interest from Multilateral Agencies:

  • The ongoing engagement reflects AIIB’s sustained interest in supporting sustainable urban mobility initiatives in India. 
  • Moreover, several other multilateral financial institutions have also shown similar interest in funding parts of the Phase II project and its future expansions.

Conclusion:

The AIIB’s review and exploratory visit signal growing international support for Chennai’s metro infrastructure.
