The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has approved a USD 122.32 million loan for Kochi Metro Phase II. This project aims to enhance urban mobility along the Jawaharlal Nehru (JLN) Stadium to Infopark corridor via Kakkanad, significantly improving transportation connectivity in Kochi.

The project will support the implementation of Phase-II of Kochi Metro Rail that will include the construction of an elevated, electrified metro rail system of 11.2 km and 11 stations along the JLN Stadium – Smart City corridor. AIIB will finance (i) the design and build of a viaduct structure, stations, and tracks; and (ii) the procurement and installation of systems, including signalling, telecommunications, auxiliary main substation, traction and power supply facilities.
Background:
The Government of India has applied for financing in the amount of US$ 122.32 million equivalent from the AIIB toward the cost of the Kochi Metro Rail Project – Phase II, and it intends to apply part of the proceeds to payments for goods, works, non-consulting services and consulting services to be procured under this project. The project will include the following components:
- Component 1 – Civil Works: This will support the design and build of 11.2 km of elevated viaduct, including stations and tracks.
- Component 2 – Railway Systems and Trains: This will support the procurement and installation of systems, including, among others: telecommunications, traction and power supply facilities, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), auxiliary main substation, electrical and mechanical works, lift(s), and escalator(s).
