In its 94th meeting, the Network Planning Group (NPG) reviewed four transformative Metro rail proposals under the PM GatiShakti framework. The goal of these projects is to improve urban connectivity, decongest areas, and access to regional hubs, promoting sustainable urban mobility and growth.
Introduction:
Marking a pivotal move in India’s infrastructure modernization drive, during Network Planning Group (NPG) 94th meeting, four major Metro rail proposals under PM GatiShakti National Master Plan (PMGS-NMP) evaluated. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) presented these proposals during the meeting to enhance seamless connectivity, reduce congestion and improve travel experiences.
The PM GatiShakti approach highlights a unified and data-driven planning framework, fostering synergy across transport and logistics networks. The latest approvals showcase the initiative’s expanding impact in shaping India’s urban transport infrastructure for better socio-economic outcomes.
Metro Projects Approved by NPG:
Aerocity to IGD T-1 Metro Extension:
Length: 2.16 km (underground)
Corridor: Extension of the Aerocity–Tughlakabad line to Indira Gandhi Domestic Terminal 1 (IGD T-1)
Key Features-
- A new station will be developed at IGD T-1.
- The extension will enhance direct airport access for residents of Tughlakabad, Khanpur, Saket, Mehrauli, and Vasant Kunj.
- Commuters from Faridabad will benefit via the Tughlakabad interchange.
This short yet strategically significant corridor will substantially improve airport accessibility while offering high connectivity to south Delhi and Faridabad commuters.
Extension of Line 8 (Magenta Line) – Ramakrishna Ashram Marg to Indraprastha:
- Length: 9.913 km (fully underground)
- Key Stations: Central Vista, India Gate, Pragati Maidan, War Memorial, Delhi High Court, Shivaji Stadium
Highlights-
- A new station near India Gate will provide secure and efficient access for tourists and citizens alike.
- The project seeks to curb the use of private vehicles and intermediate public transport (IPT).
- Encourages environmentally friendly commuting via a clean, sustainable metro service.
This corridor strengthens the capital’s core with climate-conscious, high-density public transport options.
Extension of Line 10 (Golden Line) – Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj:
Length: 9 km (elevated)
Route: Through Ali Village, Ali Vihar, and Madanpur Khadar
Connectivity:
- Key interchange at Kalindi Kunj with the existing Magenta Line
- Enhances connectivity between Violet and Magenta lines
- Links Delhi with Noida and Greater Noida, improving airport and regional access.
This project plays a vital role in improving east-west corridor linkages across NCR, easing commuter travel between residential and employment hubs.
Noida Sector-51 to Knowledge Park V, Greater Noida Metro Corridor:
Length: 17.435 km (7.263 km in Noida, 10.172 km in Greater Noida)
Purpose:
- To directly connect Noida with Greater Noida West township
- Serve the high-growth sectors and upcoming residential clusters
As urban growth intensifies in Noida-Greater Noida, this line will bring the necessary relief to regular commuters, supporting new economic zones and real estate growth.
Conclusion:
These four Metro projects, evaluated by the NPG under the PM GatiShakti vision, promise to change urban mobility in Delhi and NCR. By accelerating airport connectivity, decongesting traffic zones, and promoting regional integration, they make the way for efficient, sustainable, and commuter-friendly infrastructure aligned with India’s future urban transport goals.
