In a remarkable achievement on World Environment Day, Mumbai Metro Lines 2A and 7 were officially declared carbon-neutral. Around 85,849 tonnes of CO₂ emissions eliminated, MMRDA marks this milestone with dignitaries and environmental certifications, making the way for a greener, sustainable Mumbai and stronger climate action on a global platform.
Mumbai Metro Achieves Carbon Neutrality on World Environment Day:
Mumbai took a significant step towards environmental sustainability as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) officially declared both Metro Lines 2A and 7 as carbon-neutral corridors. The achievement came on the special occasion of World Environment Day, representing the city’s dedication to cleaner air and reduced carbon emissions.
The celebration was attended by several dignitaries including Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis and Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister Shri Ajit Pawar. They were formally presented with the Carbon Neutrality and Carbon Credit Certificates, recognizing the positive environmental impact of these metro lines.
Brief Corridor Details:
- Line 2A: Dahisar East to DN Nagar
- Line 7: Dahisar East to Gundavali
Looking forward, MMRDA plans to amplify this green and clean initiative further by registering additional lines like—2B, 4, 4A, 5, 6, 7A, and 9—under the VERRA Carbon Registry, aligning Mumbai Metro with globally recognized greenhouse gas reduction protocols.
Key Environmental Qualification:
- PAS 2060:2014 Verified – the global standard for carbon neutrality
- Certified by Universal Carbon Registry (UCR)
- 85,849 tonnes of CO₂ avoided due to modal shift from private vehicles to metro usage
Positive Impacts for Mumbai and India:
- This will improve air quality and public health benefits
- Significantly support India’s global climate commitments
- Drive attraction of international green finance and climate investments
- Enhanced resilience against climate risks
Conclusion:
Mumbai Metro’s carbon-neutral certification cements a pivotal shift in India’s green transit sustainability journey. By reducing emissions and leading with international standards, the city marks a compelling example for climate-forward urban transport. With future corridors soon to follow, Mumbai is well on its way to becoming a model green metropolis.
