Mumbai Metro Line-3: MMRC MD Ashwini Bhide reviews Girgaon and JSS metro stations

Ms. Ashwini Bhide, MD of MMRC, recently inspected Girgaon and JSS Metro stations of the Mumbai Metro Line-3 (Aqua Line 3) with several senior officials. The review focused on assessing construction progress as the project is advancing towards operational readiness. Both stations are pivotal to Mumbai’s underground metro connectivity.

Introduction:

Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) continues to amplify its efforts toward the timely completion of the ambitious Mumbai Metro Line-3, also known as the Aqua Line. Ms. Ashwini Bhide, Managing Director of MMRC, along with Mr. S.K. Gupta, Director (Projects), Mr. Rajeev, Director (Systems), and other senior officials conducted a site visit to two key stations—Girgaon and Jagannath Shankar Sheth (JSS)—to review the progress of ongoing civil and systems work.

About the Stations – Girgaon & JSS:

Both Girgaon and JSS stations are part of the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ corridor, poised to accelerate urban mobility in Mumbai. Girgaon station, situated in a densely populated area, is one of the more challenging locations on the route due to its congested geography and heritage structures.

  • Girgaon Station: Located in South Mumbai, this station is a vital node for commuters in the Kalbadevi and Girgaon areas.
  • JSS Station: Named after Jagannath Shankar Sheth, this station serves as another crucial underground halt facilitating hassle-free access to inner-city regions.

Inspection Highlights:

  • During the visit, the MMRC team reviewed several key aspects:
  • Structural completion of station boxes and entry/exit points
  • Status of track laying, platform finishing, and escalator/elevator installation
  • Signaling and systems integration, including fire safety and ventilation systems
  • Coordination between civil and system contractors to ensure seamless progress
  • The inspection aimed to ensure synchronization across disciplines and resolve any bottlenecks impacting timelines.

Importance of the Aqua Line:

The Aqua Line-3 project is vital to ease Mumbai’s congested suburban rail network. Once operational, it will link Colaba in South Mumbai to SEEPZ in the north, passing through key commercial, business, and residential areas including Churchgate, CST, Dadar, Mahalaxmi, and BKC.

With 27 underground stations, this corridor is one of India’s ambitious urban transit undertakings and is expected to serve 1.6 million commuters daily once fully operational.

About the Corridor – Mumbai Metro Line-3:

Mumbai Metro Line-3 (MML-3) is a game changer urban infrastructure project designed to provide ease to the city’s overburdened suburban railway network. The fully underground corridor will span 33.5 km and consist of 27 stations, connecting Cuffe Parade to Aarey via Bandra and SEEPZ.

The list of stations on the corridor includes:

Cuffe Parade, Vidhan Bhavan, Churchgate, Hutatma Chowk, CST Metro, Kalbadevi, Girgaon, Grant Road, Mumbai Central, Mahalaxmi Metro, Science Museum, Acharya Atre Chowk, Worli, Siddhi Vinayak, Dadar Metro, Shitaladevi Temple, Dharavi, BKC Metro, Vidya Nagari, Santacruz, Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport (Domestic), Sahar Road, Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Marol Naka, MIDC, SEEPZ, and Goregaon.

Project Objectives and Benefits:

The MML-3 is being implemented by MMRC, a joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Maharashtra, each holding a 50% share. The aim of the project is to provide a high-capacity transit system to supplement the existing modes of transport in Mumbai.

Key advantages of the project include:

  • Improve comfort with fully air-conditioned coaches
  • Less travel time for commuters
  • Better access to major business districts, educational institutions, and airport terminals
  • More safety and accessibility, especially for differently-abled and elderly passengers

Conclusion:

The review by MMRC’s top leadership underlines the project’s final push toward commissioning. As construction nears completion, Girgaon and JSS stations are shaping up to become crucial underground transit hubs, ensuring better mobility in Mumbai’s core. The Aqua Line continues to represent an achievement in India’s metro infrastructure journey.
