The Kanpur Metro project is progressing steadily as UPMRCL completes the casting of two crucial cross-overs near Baradevi Station. Track laying has reached 4.5 km on both up and down lines of the 5-km elevated stretch between Baradevi and Naubasta. System works are also advancing continuously.
Introduction:
The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (UPMRCL) has marked a significant achievement in the construction of the Baradevi–Naubasta elevated section of the Kanpur Metro project. Part of Corridor-1 connecting IIT Kanpur to Naubasta, this 5-kilometer stretch has now seen track laying completed up to 4.5 kilometers on both up and down lines, signalling a near-final phase of civil progress.
Key Engineering Milestone Completed:
On-site progress on the elevated section witnessed a key milestone today with the successful casting of two cross-over structures near Baradevi station. These cross-overs are essential for enabling train movement between up and down tracks, facilitating operational flexibility during train reversals, maintenance, or service adjustments.
This task, executed with precision engineering and safety considerations, forms a critical part of preparing the section for dynamic testing and trial runs.
Track Work Nearly Completed:
UPMRCL’s consistent focus and engineering discipline have ensured that track laying work along this corridor remains well ahead of schedule. As of now, 4.5 kilometers of track out of the 5-kilometer elevated stretch has been completed on both up and down lines, leaving only the final stages before full-track readiness is achieved.
System Integration Underway:
Parallel to track construction, installation of critical systems such as signalling, telecom, and electrical infrastructure is progressing rapidly. These integrated systems are vital for ensuring safety, efficiency, and real-time train operations once the metro becomes functional.
- Signalling system– The modern CBTC-based system will allow for high-frequency, driver-supervised services.
- Telecommunication setup– Provides live operational control, surveillance, and communication across stations and central command.
- Electrification– Includes overhead catenary systems for traction and energy-efficient operations.
Strategic Role in Metro Expansion:
The Baradevi–Naubasta stretch is part of the larger Corridor-1 (IIT Kanpur to Naubasta) route, one of the two priority corridors under Phase-1 of the Kanpur Metro project. Once operational, this section will serve as a vital transit link connecting densely populated neighborhoods in southern Kanpur to the core city and educational institutions.
This progress reflects UPMRCL’s commitment to executing infrastructure with speed and quality. Kanpurites can expect reduced travel time, smoother connectivity, and a much-needed urban mobility upgrade upon project completion.
Conclusion:
The completion of cross-over casting and near-total track installation on the Baradevi–Naubasta stretch signals Kanpur Metro’s rapid progress toward operational readiness. With systems work advancing in parallel, UPMRCL remains focused on delivering a modern, efficient transit solution that will transform daily commuting for the people of Kanpur.
