In a pivotal step, Chennai Metro has commenced trial runs on the downline of Corridor-4 from Porur Junction to Poonamallee Bypass stations. This marks full-track testing on this 10 km viaduct, with the support of IRCON and the newly commissioned Auxiliary Substation at Poonamallee. These developments push forward Phase-2’s delivery timeline and urban connectivity in Chennai city.
More Details:
The CMRL has successfully initiated the testing and trial runs on the downline of Corridor-4 in Phase-2 of the metro project. This recent milestone was achieved between Porur Junction Metro Station and Poonamallee Bypass Metro Station on a crucial 10 km viaduct stretch integral to Chennai’s expanding metro network.
This achievement follows the earlier commencement of trial runs on the upline, bringing both tracks into the trial phase and marking progress toward full commissioning. The Poonamallee Metro Depot will act as the operational hub for ongoing testing, coordination, and monitoring of the corridor.
The Auxiliary Substation (ASS) Commissioned:
- In a key systems milestone, the Auxiliary Substation (ASS) at Poonamallee Bypass Metro Station was successfully charged via a 33kV supply from the Poonamallee Receiving Substation.
- The commissioning was presided over by Mr. M.A. Siddique, I.A.S., Managing Director of CMRL, alongside the Director team and senior leadership from CMRL and contractors.
- The event highlighted the readiness of the system to move forward into a comprehensive testing phase aimed at verifying safety, operational efficiency, and commuter comfort.
IRCON’s Contribution in Track Implementation:
IRCON International Ltd., making its significant contribution with executing the track works for Corridor-4, played a robust role in this milestone. The successful downline trial, conducted at 3:00 PM on June 6, 2025, is a testament to IRCON’s engineering precision and commitment to timelines.
Covering the 10 km viaduct, this section from Poonamallee Bypass to Porur Junction forms part of the “Priority Section” and reinforces Chennai’s urban transit upgrade. The collaborative efforts of both CMRL and IRCON exemplify a shared vision for a smarter, faster, reliable and more accessible Chennai Metro.
Conclusion:
The downline trial between Porur Junction and Poonamallee Bypass is a strategic leap toward operational readiness for Corridor-4. With both tracks now under testing and key infrastructure like the ASS activated, Chennai Metro moves closer to its Phase-2 vision of offering reliable, sustainable, and world-class urban transport to the city.
