UPMRC achieved a milestone with the tunnel breakthrough at Mankameshwar Metro Station in Agra. With this tunneling breakthrough, all the tunneling work of corridor-1 is completed, East Gate–Sikandra stretch is now advancing towards other necessary infrastructure work like station infrastructure, track laying, system installation, and expanding the state’s urban connectivity.
Introduction:
In a major development in civil infrastructure development, Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has completed tunnelling breakthroughs at Agra Metro’s Corridor-1. The key event was the Mankameshwar Metro Station tunnel breakthrough by using an advanced Tunnel boring machine (TBM). This development now brought Agra Metro one step closer to enhancement in urban infrastructure and travel convenience of the passengers.
Tunneling Completed for Corridor-1:
Agra metro’s corridor-1 is a 14 kilometers stretch spanning from Taj East Gate to Sikandara, and has achieved the last tunnel breakthrough for the corridor. Now that a huge part of the construction work is over, UPMRC can focus on other necessary works. This achievement is possible because of the advanced TBM, technological systems and continuous efforts of the team.
- An advanced Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) was used for the tunneling work of the designated stretch.
- Mankameshwar Metro Station comes under the underground section of Corridor-1.
Corridor-1 – An Overview:
Agra Metro’s Corridor-1 begins around 105 meters before Akbar’s Tomb in Sikandara and continues eastward to Taj East Gate (Hotel Trident), running mostly adjacent to National Highway 2 (NH-2). This corridor is mainly established to provide smooth urban mobility and boost tourist places and enhance commuters’ travelling convenience.
Key Features of Corridor-1:
- Total Length: 14 km
- Starting Point: Sikandara (near Akbar’s Tomb)
- End Point: Taj East Gate
- Alignment: Combination of elevated and underground sections
Agra Metro’s Priority Corridor:
The priority corridor of Agra Metro has six operational stations, offering partial metro service while construction continues across the entire corridor.
Stations under Priority Corridor:
Elevated-
- Taj East Gate
- Shaheed Captain Shubham Gupta (formerly Basai)
- Fatehabad Road
Underground-
- Taj Mahal
- Agra Fort
- Mankameshwar Temple
These stations are seen as heritage landmarks and high-commuter areas in Agra, including the iconic Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, allowing tourists and commuters to benefit from modern public transport infrastructure.
Next Phase of Development:
With tunneling works now complete, UPMRC will focus on-
- Station finishing works
- Track laying across remaining segments
- Installation of signaling, telecom, and traction systems
- Final system integration and trial runs
These steps are vital in preparing the corridor for its final commissioning and full-fledged operations across all 14 km.
Boost to Connectivity and Tourism:
After corridor-1 becomes operational, it will provide seamless connectivity and convenient travelling for commuters. This corridor consists of residential areas with UNESCO heritage sites, showing Agra’s image as a smart and sustainable tourist destination.
Conclusion:
With the TBM breakthrough at Mankameshwar Station, UPMRC has accomplished a major milestone in the Agra Metro project. Completion of tunneling across Corridor-1 showcases a shift toward the next construction phase, moving Agra closer to a better urban mobility and improved connectivity for citizens and tourists.
