Tunnelling For Package 2 has Started From Azad Maidan To Grant Road At The Hands Of Chief Secretary Govt. Of Maharashtra

Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) today initiated the tunnelling activity for package-2 which comprises of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) Metro, Kalbadevi, Girgaon and Grant Road stations. Mr. Sumit Mullick, Chief Secretary, Govertment of Maharashtra pressed the start button when Mr. Ajoy Mehta, Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai; Mr. Anand Kulkarni, Chairman, Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission along with other senior IAS officers witnessed the initiation of tunnelling activity at Metro Line III launching shaft in Azad Maidan.

The T-58 TBM weighing 817 tonnes manufactured by German major Terratec at its plant in Guangzhou, China will be used to construct 4.5 km long route between Azad Maidan & Grant Road.

The machine cleared Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) in July 2017 and arrived in Mumbai by mid-September which was then lowered and assembled in 45 days.

Commenting on the occasion, Ms. Aswhini Bhide, MD, MMRC said, “We are pleased to have a positive feedback from the such a learned bunch. Their confidence in the project motivates us for a speedy execution. As of today, we have completed 14% of the civil works and are confident to complete the remaining as per the schedule by December 2021.

MMRC, General Consultants, Contractors and the team of experts including expats – buoyed by the presence of these learned IAS officers will ensure the smooth operation for the 4.5 km long route covered by the machine between Azad Maidan & Grant Road.”

Second TBM of package-4 also stated tunnelling today with this in all 3 machines out of 17 have been be deployed to construct tunnels with a 6.8 m diameter connecting Colaba in the south to SEEPZ in the north of Mumbai.

The entire tunnelling activity is expected to be completed in next two years and total of 12 TBM’s have cleared FAT of which 6 have already arrived and others are expected to arrive in the city by February 2018.
