Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation is constructing a key metro viaduct across the Tapi River for Surat Metro’s Corridor-2. The project features eight special 50m spans using segmental box girders, minimizing riverbed impact. The corridor connects Bheshan to Saroli and is expected to be completed before the 2025 monsoon.
Project Overview:
Marking a pivotal move, Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) is executing a significant metro infrastructure task by constructing a viaduct through the Tapi River. This forms a crucial part of Corridor-2 of the Surat Metro Rail Project.
About the Corridor:
Popularly referred to as the Textile Corridor, this alignment connects Bheshan in the west to Saroli in the east-ensuring seamless metro connectivity across Surat city.
River Viaduct Engineering:
To preserve the natural river flow and minimize construction in the riverbed, GMRC is deploying 8 special spans of 50 meters each-double the length of standard spans (20–25m).
Construction Methodology:
- The 50m spans are being built using segmental box girders, installed with launching girder technology.
- A total of 144 precast segments will be erected for this portion.
Environmental Consideration:
- A temporary jetty was constructed to carry out foundation work without interrupting the river’s natural flow.
- The project timeline targets completion of this segment by June 2025, ahead of the monsoon season.
Inspection of Gandhinagar Metro Route:
The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) will inspect the Gandhinagar Metro route from Motera Stadium to Sachivalaya/Gift City on April 19, 2025. This inspection is a vital step toward ensuring operational readiness and safety compliance, paving the way for the commencement of commercial services on this important metro corridor.
Conclusion:
The Tapi River viaduct represents an engineering feat in the Surat Metro project, emphasizing sustainability and urban connectivity. With strategic span design and eco-conscious execution, GMRC is poised to finish the corridor on time. This development will significantly enhance east-west mobility, benefiting both Surat’s citizens and industries.
