Shri Sanjeev Kumar, IAS, visits BEML’s rail manufacturing hub in Bengaluru

Shri Sanjeev Kumar, IAS, Secretary, Department of Defence Production, visited BEML’s Rail Manufacturing Hub in Bengaluru. He was welcomed by CMD Shri Shantanu Roy, this visit showcased BEML’s cutting-edge capabilities in metro coach and bogie manufacturing, highlighting its contribution to India’s metro fleet and commitment to self-reliant rail infrastructure.


Driving the Future of Mobility:

BEML Ltd. had the honour of hosting Shri Sanjeev Kumar, IAS, Secretary, Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence, Government of India, at its Bengaluru Rail Complex, an India’s premier facility for the manufacturing of metro and rail coaches.

Shri Kumar was welcomed by Shri Shantanu Roy, Chairman and Managing Director, BEML Ltd., alongside the company’s functional directors and senior leadership. The visit marked a significant moment in reinforcing India’s commitment to strengthening its domestic rail manufacturing capabilities under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.

Tour of Key Facilities:

During the visit, Shri Kumar undertook a detailed walkthrough of BEML’s advanced manufacturing units, including-

  • Aerospace Unit
  • Rail Car Manufacturing Division, which comprises:
  • Car Body and Bogie Hangars
  • Underframe Unit
  • All-Women ‘Pink Line’ Assembly Section

He also reviewed the progress of BEML’s upcoming state-of-the-art unit dedicated to bogie production for rail and metro applications, signaling a strategic move toward expanding domestic capability in critical components.

Recognition of Engineering Excellence:

Shri Kumar expressed appreciation for the scale, efficiency, and technological innovation demonstrated by BEML’s Bengaluru Complex. With over 45% of India’s metro coaches currently in service manufactured here, BEML continues to play a vital role in shaping the future of urban transportation in India.

He commended the team for its engineering expertise and forward-looking approach, particularly in areas such as automation, gender-inclusive workforce participation, and high-precision assembly lines that align with global standards.

Latest Developments of BEML:

  • In June, BEML laid the foundation for a central warehousing hub in Bilaspur to strengthen supply chain infrastructure.
  • In May, they strengthened ties with Maharashtra to accelerate urban mobility and indigenous Infrastructure.
  • In the same month, they marked a manufacturing milestone with the 2100th metro coach flagged off at the Bangalore facility.
  • In the same month, they got land approval from the MP Government for a rolling stock manufacturing unit in Raisen.
  • In March, they secured Rs. 405 crore Rolling Stock contract from Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation.
