RVNL bags Rs. 143 crore order from Southern Railway for 2×25 kV traction system upgrade

Southern Railway has entrusted Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) with the upgradation of the electric traction system from 1×25 kV to 2×25 kV in the Salem–Podanur–Coimbatore section. This project, valued at over Rs. 143 crore, aims to support a 3000 MT loading target and is expected to be completed within 24 months.


Introduction: 

Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) bagged a significant electrification upgrade order from Southern Railway. The project involves converting the current 1×25 kV electric traction system to a more efficient 2×25 kV system.

The project will cover critical sections under the Salem division, including:

  • Salem Jn. (SA) – Podanur Jn. (PTJ)
  • Irugur (IGU) – Coimbatore Jn. (CBE) – Podanur Jn. (PTJ)

Objective:

This traction enhancement is part of Southern Railway’s broader plan to increase the line’s power capacity and efficiency in order to meet the projected 3000 MT freight loading target in the region.

Contract Value and Timeline:

  • Contract Amount: Rs. 143,37,87,127.90
  • Completion Period: 24 months from the date of award

Recent Update of RVNL:

Central Railway has assigned a contract worth Rs. 115.79 crore to Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) for upgrading the OHE system from 1×25 kV to 2×25 kV in the Itarsi–Amla section in Nagpur Division. This project aims to support a 3000 MT loading target, increasing capacity and reliability across the Nagpur Division of Central Railway.

Conclusion:

The transition to a 2×25 kV traction system by RVNL marks a critical step in Southern Railway’s electrification and freight capacity augmentation strategy. This project is expected to significantly boost energy efficiency and freight movement, supporting Indian Railways’ larger goal of sustainable and high-capacity railway infrastructure.
