Northern Railway Inks MoU with RailTel for Modernizing Signalling System

RailTel Enterprises ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of RailTel Corporation of India Ltd., has been awarded the work of replacement of old mechanical signalling equipment with state-of-the-art electronic interlocking system at 13 stations of Northern Railway.

The existing mechanical signalling systems are using lever frames to both lower the signal and change the tracks. The new electronic interlocking signalling system will now enable lowering the signal and changing of tracks by click of a mouse.

There are total 13 stations which have been assigned to REL, out of which 3 are in Delhi Division and 10 are in Umbala Division. The stations of Delhi division are Kalayat, Kaithal and Pehowa Road. The 10 stations of Umbala Division are Anandpur Sahib, Nangal Dam, Ropar Thermal Plant, Balluana, Giddarbaha, Malout, Pakki, Panjkosi, Hindumalkot and Fatuhi. The anticipated cost of this project is approximately Rs. 87 crores.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was inked between REL and Northern Railway to execute the work. Sh.Neeraj Gupta CSTE/project .and Sh.P.V.Sreekanth GGM/REL signed the MoU in presence of Sh. T.P. Singh, General Manager/Northern Railway (over video conferencing from Jaipur) , Sh. Rajesh Tiwari Add.GM/NR , Sh. S.P. Upadhayay, PCSTE/Northern Railway, Sh. Puneet Chawla, Chairman/REL, Sh. A.K Sablania Dir./REL and other high-level officials from Railways and REL.

Elaborating on the utility of this new system, Sh. T.P Singh, GM/ Northern Railways, said “These state-of -the-art signalling system will go a long way in improving safety and efficiency in train operations. We need to expeditiously complete these stations.”

Talking on the project Sh. Puneet Chawla, Chairman/REL, said ,”the entire work will be completed by December 2019 and REL team is committed to bring cutting edge technology in upgrading the signalling system in these 13 stations”.

This is the first Railway Signalling project being executed by REL.
