The North Central Railway has inaugurated a cutting-edge Electronic Interlocking (EI) system at Prayagraj Junction, enhancing safety and operational flexibility. The system, installed as part of yard remodelling and track doubling between Prayagraj Jn. and Prayagraj Rambagh, streamlines train dispatches, reduces delays, and accommodates future high-traffic demands.
Overview of the Electronic Interlocking System:
Manufactured by Kyosan, this EI system at Prayagraj Junction offers 825 operational routes, providing seamless and flexible train movements. The newly installed interlocking replaces the ageing Route Relay Interlocking, in place since 1993, and is equipped to handle the surge in traffic, including demands from upcoming events like the Kumbh Mela.
Inspection and Launch:
Shri Pranjeev Saxena, Commissioner of Railway Safety (North Eastern Circle), inspected the facility, accompanied by key personnel including Shri Himanshu Badoni, Divisional Railway Manager, Prayagraj. Post-inspection, he conducted a motor trolley and speed trial to test the operational readiness of the system.
Key Features of the System:
- Infrastructure Enhancements: The project includes 20 lines, 206 signals, and 172 point machines, designed to manage complex train operations.
- Technological Upgrades: Nine Visual Display Units and five Data Loggers have been installed to monitor and enhance safety.
- Improved Flexibility: The system allows simultaneous train receptions and dispatches, supporting smoother operations for multiple routes.
Impact on Train Operations and Future Readiness:
The advanced interlocking system drastically reduces train detention times and enhances the yard’s capacity to accommodate Varanasi, Lucknow, Deendayal Upadhyay, and Satna-bound trains. By allowing simultaneous train movements, it supports efficient dispatches and enhances line availability in the Prayagraj yard, preparing it for future traffic demands.
Phase-Wise Upgrades and Additional Features:
- Doubling the track between Prayagraj Jn. and Prayagraj Rambagh.
- Extending the Niranjan bridge and converting key lines for more efficient train handling.
- Adding crossover points and stabling lines for better train accommodation and maintenance.
Conclusion:
The new Electronic Interlocking system at Prayagraj Junction represents a transformative step in Indian Railways’ modernization. It strengthens operational safety and efficiency, positions Prayagraj for increased future traffic, and underscores North Central Railway’s commitment to improving passenger experiences and meeting the nation’s evolving rail infrastructure needs.
