The NCRTC has commenced trial runs up to Modipuram, marking a significant step toward completing the entire Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor. This development connects Meerut’s underground section to Delhi’s high-speed rail, pushing India closer to launching its first full-scale RRTS journey in record time.
Introduction:
On May 1, 2025, the NCRTC initiated trial runs between Shatabdi Nagar and Modipuram, the last station on the Delhi-Meerut stretch. For the first time, the Namo Bharat train crossed through Meerut’s underground section, symbolizing a key breakthrough in linking the city’s core with the national capital.
Testing Integration and Speed:
- During the initial trials, trains are being manually operated to test compatibility with civil structures.
- Over time, NCRTC will expand testing to include system integration, covering track performance, platform screen doors, and the overhead electrification system.
- High-speed runs reaching up to 180 kmph are planned in the coming days.
Meerut’s Unique Underground-Elevated Blend:
The Meerut section showcases India’s first underground RRTS stations — Meerut Central, Bhaisali, and Begumpul — with Begumpul serving both Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro. From Tank Chowk onward, the corridor rises to an elevated alignment, culminating at Modipuram, the final RRTS stop, with other stations serving the local Metro.
India’s First Dual-Use Infrastructure:
- Uniquely, the Meerut Metro operates on the same infrastructure as Namo Bharat — a first in India.
- The 23 km Metro corridor includes 13 stations, combining elevated and underground routes.
- Trial runs for the Meerut Metro are already underway between Meerut South and Meerut Central.
Future Connectivity and Hubs:
Key stations like Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram are being developed as multi-modal hubs, integrating RRTS, Metro, and local transport services like autos, taxis, and buses. Once the full 82 km corridor opens, the high-speed journey between Delhi and Meerut will shrink to just 55 minutes.
Conclusion:
With trial runs now reaching Modipuram, NCRTC is on track to operationalize the entire Delhi-Meerut corridor within this year. This transformative project promises to revolutionize intercity travel, setting new benchmarks for speed, connectivity, and urban integration, and ushering in a new era for India’s high-speed rail network.
