Mumbai: The MMRC (Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation) has received the 2nd Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) for the construction of Metro-3.
The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) will lower the TBM in mid-October at the launching shaft at Azad Maidan, which is a part of the package 2.
The machine will be used to construct a 4km long tunnel between CST station up to Mumbai Central metro station including Kalbadevi, Girgaon & Grant road stations.
The TBM, procured from Australian major Terratech Private Ltd, from its manufacturing facility in Guangzhou at China, weighs 817 tonnes with a diameter of 6.68 metres.
The assembling process will take 45 days.
Ashwini Bhide, the Managing Director, MMRC said,“Completing Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) for almost all the 17 TBMs, we welcome the arrival of Metro III’s second tunnel boring machine. The TBM will allow soft, wet, hard or unstable ground to be tunnelled with speed and safety.”
She added,“For safe construction and reducing the impact on the surrounding environments, we are using a technology that will be applied by implementing a real-time monitoring and safety evaluation system to track the process during excavation.”
