Ministry Of Railway Decides To Spend Rs 1,000 Crore A Month On Track Renewal

New Delhi: Ministry of Railways has decided to replace old & out-of-date tracks with new ones with a target to spend Rs 1,000 crore a month over the next six months.

Union Railway Minister Mr. Piyush Goyal ordered the spend after raising the track renewal target for the current fiscal to 3,600 kilometer, an 80 percent jump over the average 2,000 kilometer of tracks renewed by the railways every fiscal.

  • Also, The minister has cleared a proposal to call for global bids for supply of rails next month.
  • State-run Steel Authority of India was until now meeting 80-85% of the total demand for rails.
  • The minister just wants to ensure that the massive track renewal exercise is not halted for want of supplies, a top railway official said.
  • The official said,“We will be changing everything from track ballasts to the clips.”
  • “The work is being done on a war footing. Tracks are already being routed to the desired locations. General managers of the zones have been instructed to award maintenance blocks wherever needed,” the official said.
