The Lucknow Metro’s innovative energy conservation measures are top notch and energy efficient apart from being eco-friendly. These not only carry forward the vision of ‘Clean Metro-Green Metro’ but also play a major role in the conservation and preservation of the city’s environment thereby contributing to Lucknow Metro’s drive of providing seamless connectivity to the Lucknowites.
The regenerative braking technology used in trains is capable in energy optimization by saving 30-35% traction energy thus contributing to energy efficiency. The same regenerative braking technology is also being used in lifts. LMRC has also introduced controlled air conditioning system at the station areas and in the trains based on the number of people using it so that when number of people are less in the train the level of cooling will automatically go down. The air conditioning (cooling system) is also equipped with chillers which have Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) in addition to chiller plant manager for the optimization of energy efficiency.
In line with Lucknow Metro’s vision of Energy conservation and being energy efficient mode of Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS), has led to the transformation of lighting arrangements at all the stations, lifts and escalators through installation of LED lighting. LED lighting not only minimizes power and energy consumption but also provides more brightness, ambience and illumination. In the underground section, the energy efficient Environment Control System (ECS) and Tunnel Ventilation System (TVS) will be used.
To minimize air pollution Digiset with scrubbers have been installed at the Metro station premises. Moreover, the entry/exit gates have glass roof tops to reduce energy consumption by allowing sunlight and to beautify the surroundings. To maintain the greenery of the outdoor station areas plantation has been done which gives an aesthetic appeal to the Metro stations. Special arrangements have also been made for rain water harvesting in the underground section for irrigating plants grown at the entry/exit gates. By generating power from the roof mounted solar panels at the Metro depot and administrative building, the LMRC is continuously serving as a role model of utilization of renewable energy for other such projects.
Lucknow Metro’s objective of decongestion of traffic woes by considerably reducing travelling time and streamlining the mass rapid transportation system for the urban population will be beneficial for the Lucknowites in the long run.
