The Mominpur-Esplanade stretch of the Joka-Esplanade Metro Corridor, part of Kolkata Metro’s Purple Line, is witnessing rapid construction progress. Leveraging cutting-edge technology and eco-conscious methods, the project exemplifies the synergy between development and sustainability. This underground stretch aims to enhance urban connectivity while aligning with the ‘Make in India’ mission.
Tunnel Construction:
Two state-of-the-art Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), featuring an inner finished diameter of 5.80 meters, will create twin tube tunnels. These TBMs are being manufactured in Chennai, incorporating significant local content to support the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The TBMs are expected to commence operations by March 2025.

Underground Stations:
Stations from Park Street to Esplanade will be constructed using the Cut and Cover method. The rail level for the underground section will be approximately 17 meters below the ground, ensuring efficient spatial utilization and passenger convenience.
Visual Insights Through a Model Room:
A dedicated Model Room, developed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) at Victoria station, provides a comprehensive representation of the construction process.
Key exhibits include:
- Scale models of alignments, underground stations, and tunnel linings.
- Illustrations of soil profiles, construction machineries, safety equipment, and instrumentation markers.
- Project information detailing the Purple Line’s significance and construction intricacies.

This Model Room serves as an educational and informative resource, offering stakeholders and visitors an in-depth understanding of the project’s technical aspects.
Sustainability Initiatives:
Approximately 1,000 trees at construction sites in the Maidan area are being transplanted instead of being felled, maintaining ecological balance. The transplantation process complies with directives from the Hon’ble Supreme Court, and permissions have been sought from the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) to ensure adherence to environmental guidelines.
Conclusion:
The Mominpur-Esplanade stretch of the Purple Line demonstrates how modern infrastructure projects can harmonize innovation with environmental responsibility. With sustainable practices and advanced technology under the ‘Make in India’ program, the project is set to redefine urban mobility in Kolkata, contributing to the city’s progress while preserving its ecological heritage.
