Kolkata Metro: CRS inspects CBTC signalling system on Joka–Majerhat stretch of Purple Line

Shri Sumit Singhal, Commissioner of Railway Safety inspected the advanced CBTC-based signalling system on Kolkata Metro’s Purple Line between Joka and Majerhat. This significant step brings the corridor closer to operational readiness. Rolling stock, train operations, maintenance facilities, and the Operation Control Centre get thoroughly checked ensuring complete preparedness for operation.


Inspection Overview:

The Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system was inspected by Shri Sumit Singhal, Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) for Metro & NF Circle, on the Joka–Majerhat section of the Purple Line. 

  • Starting Point – Joka Depot: The inspection commenced from the Joka Depot, where the CRS reviewed the carshed, maintenance facilities, and rolling stock in detail.
  • On-Track Evaluation: A live demonstration of train operations using the CBTC system was conducted. The CRS boarded a rake and travelled from Joka Depot to Majerhat station, assessing the signalling and train control functionalities in real time.
  • OCC Visit at Majerhat: Upon arrival at Majerhat, the Commissioner visited the Operation Control Centre (OCC) to examine monitoring and control systems that manage CBTC operations across the stretch.

Team Presence:

The inspection was accompanied by senior officials including Shri Anuj Mittal (PCE), Shri S. R. Meena (PCSTE), Metro Railway officials, and Shri Amit Tandon, ED/Metro, RVNL, showcasing strong coordination between Metro Railway and RVNL.

Conclusion:

The successful CRS inspection of the CBTC system marks a significant milestone in the operational rollout of the Joka–Majerhat Purple Line stretch. With all key components inspected and reviewed, the corridor is moving closer to commissioning, promising enhanced safety, automation, and efficiency in Kolkata Metro’s expanding urban transit network.
