Kochi Metro Update: A High-Level Delegation From French Funding Agency AFD (Agence Francaise de Developement) Reviews Kochi Metro Project

Kochi: A high-level delegation from French funding agency AFD (Agence Francaise de Developement) visited Kochi Metro’s operational control centre (OCC) & coach depot at Muttom & also key stations, concluding their 2-day appraisal visit of the project. AFD is the French development agency providing external funding for the Kochi Metro project.

The Team visited Metro Stations At-

  • Maharaja’s College Ground
  • Palarivattom
  • Edappally
  • Aluva
  • Muttom

During The Visit

  • The team subsequently visited the premises of Ernakulam Junction railway station where a 95-metre-long balanced cantilever (pillarless) viaduct is being built over railway lines.
  • Also, they visited worksites at Aluva & Edappally where modern footpaths are being built.
  • A sum of Rs 10 crore is being spent at each of the two junctions to widen & landscape them.

Discussion Held On The Metro Project

  • In their meeting with KMRL (Kochi Metro Rail Limited) officials, they discussed
    1. Progress of metro works on the Aluva-Pettah stretch
    2. Status of procurement of different components
    3. Updated calendar of implementation
    4. Submission of quarterly progress report
    5. Drawdown forecast
  • Also, they took stock of ridership, revenue, potential difficulties encountered during operation, etc., during the initial months of operation.
  • Further, discussions were held on the next stage for funding metro extensions, depending on the changes made in the DPR (detailed project report).
  • AFD, currently, has granted a Rs 1,500-crore loan for the 25km long Aluva-Pettah corridor, which is slated to cost Rs 5,182 crore.
  • It has also promised Rs 1,300 crore for the 11-km-long, Rs 2,577-crore Kakkanad extension.
  • The scope of work for the ‘Mobilize your City’ initiative in Kochi too was discussed at the meeting.

French Team Happy With Metro Work

  • The French team appreciated the progress of metro works.
  • They were happy to associate with KMRL, especially since this was a flagship project of the metro agency, they said.
  • They further lauded initiatives other than transit undertaken by KMRL, like the Water Metro project which will see introduction of 78 modern ferries in the Greater Kochi region & the project to bring about seamless integration of different commuting modes.
