The KERNEX-VRRC Consortium has secured two significant contracts from Southern Railway. The contract includes Kavach deployment across key sections of Chennai Division. KERNEX Microsystems will lead the project with a 60% stake, the projects are expected to be completed within 540 to 730 days.
Introduction:
In a significant milestone, the KERNEX Microsystems Limited – VRRC Consortium has bagged twin contracts from Southern Railway for the provision and installation of the Kavach (Train Collision Avoidance System) at Chennai division.
These contracts will accelerate operational safety of trains and minimise the train collision risk on the key sections of Chennai division. This will help in the upgradation of the signalling system and strengthen the railway infrastructure.
Contract Details:
Kavach Installation across MAS-GDR, MAS-AJJ, and AJJ-RU Sections:
- Scope: Deployment of Kavach over a stretch of 271 kilometers across three key sections: MAS-GDR, MAS-AJJ, and AJJ-RU.
- Contract Value: Rs. 173.11 Crores.
- Execution Period: 730 days.
- Division: Chennai Division, Southern Railway.
The implementation of the Kavach at the rail line with the braking systems and the real-time communication will enhance the safety of the railway routes.
Kavach Implementation with Tower and OFC Backbone between Arakkonam (AJJ IN) and Jolarpettai (JTJ IN):
- Scope: Installation of Kavach system along with supporting infrastructure including telecom towers and 48-fiber Optical Fiber Cable (OFC) between Arakkonam (AJJ IN) and Jolarpettai (JTJ IN).
- Contract Value: Rs. 137.92 Crores.
- Execution Period: 540 days.
- Division: Chennai Division, Southern Railway.
This project also focuses on building a robust digital communication backbone to support Kavach’s network requirements and allow seamless data transmission across the route.
Consortium Leadership and Strategic Significance:
KERNEX Microsystems Limited, a prestigious company in railway signaling and safety systems in India, holds a 60% share in the joint venture with VRRC. The company will play a leading role in project delivery, using its experience in executing Kavach implementation across Indian Railways.
These contract wins strengthen KERNEX’s position as a vital technology partner in the Kavach implementation goals, which is a vital safety initiative by the Ministry of Railways to equip the Indian railway network with indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) systems.
About Kavach:
Kavach is a cutting-edge Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system developed to significantly reduce train accidents. It is SIL-4 certified, the highest level of safety integrity, and engineered to prevent accidents caused by human error such as Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD).
Conclusion:
KERNEX-VRRC Consortium has received a dual contract of Kavach from Southern Railway, it will enhance safety and improve operational efficiency at the rail lines. These contracts will promote the Indian Railway’s goal of implementing Kavach at railway lines, it will enhance safety, install tech-driven systems, and improve operational efficiency.
