JICA and FITT – IIT Delhi launch Transport Stack Open Innovation Challenge to pioneer transformative mobility solutions

The Delhi Transport Stack, in collaboration with JICA and FITT @ IIT Delhi, has launched the ‘Transport Stack Open Innovation Challenge’ to address urban mobility challenges. With Boston Consulting Group as a knowledge partner, this initiative seeks data-driven solutions, offering participants mentorship, grants, and incubation opportunities to transform Delhi’s transport ecosystem.

Delhi Transport Stack: A Game-Changer in Urban Mobility:

The Delhi Transport Stack is designed to unlock transport data currently siloed across various entities, including government bodies, transport operators, and businesses. It operates on an interoperable and scalable platform, providing real-time and static datasets from over 10 agencies such as:

  • Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC)
  • Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC)
  • Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System Limited (DIMTS)

This infrastructure empowers developers and innovators to build citizen-centric services and applications to revolutionise urban mobility.

Existing Solutions and New Opportunities:

The platform’s first suite of services, including a multimodal journey planner, integrated ticketing, and park-and-ride facilities, has already been integrated into the One Delhi App. Building on this foundation, the Open Innovation Challenge seeks to address pressing mobility challenges by encouraging data-driven innovations in areas such as:

  • AI-Driven Smart Mobility
  • Sustainable Urban Commute
  • Inclusive Cities
  • Transit Safety
  • Smart Traffic Management
  • Micro-Mobility Solutions

Call for Participation:

Startups, academia, and researchers are invited to participate in the challenge, presenting innovative solutions to real-world transport problems. Participants will develop functional prototypes and test their feasibility through proof-of-concept (PoC) implementations within Delhi’s transport ecosystem.

Insights:

Mr. Yushi Nagano, Head of JICA DXLab, stated, “The Open Innovation Challenge presents an unparalleled opportunity for participants to revolutionize the future of mobility and transportation. By collaborating with the first-of-its-kind Transport Stack, innovators are empowered to create cutting-edge solutions that address some of the most urgent and complex challenges facing the mobility sector today.”

Dr. Nikhil Agarwal, MD, FITT, highlighted the need for such solutions and the high impact potential they may have on the way we use urban public mobility solutions. “Today, we observe challenges of traffic, safety and security, last mile connectivity and also some instances where public transport can be optimized for efficiency and convenience. The transport stack API and data access will surely help our innovators and entrepreneurs to come up with interesting solutions and I hope to see some of these deployed in the coming months.”

Benefits for Participants: The challenge offers a range of incentives to support innovators, including:

  • Workshops and Mentorship: Access to workshops and 1:1 guidance from industry veterans.
  • Grants of Up to USD 100K: Funding to support detailed product development and PoC implementation.
  • Six-Month Incubation Program: Incubation at FITT – IIT Delhi with access to cutting-edge facilities, mentorship, and funding opportunities.

Conclusion:

The ‘Transport Stack Open Innovation Challenge’ is a groundbreaking step toward revolutionising urban mobility in Delhi. By unlocking the potential of transport data and encouraging collaborative innovation, this initiative is set to drive transformative change in the city’s transport ecosystem, paving the way for a smarter and more inclusive urban commute.
