IRCON-SSNR JV bags Rs. 872 crore contract from RVNL for tunnel construction with ballastless track in Mangliyagaon–Budni section

IRCON International, in joint venture with SSNR Projects, has bagged a significant contract worth over Rs. 872.69 crore from RVNL for constructing tunnels and approach works on the upcoming Mangliyagaon–Budni electrified rail line. This 198-km project is vital for connecting Indore with Budni of Ratlam Division and Bhopal Division of Western Railway and West Central Railway and improving regional rail connectivity in Madhya Pradesh.

Awarded Contract Value:

Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has awarded a contract to IRCON International Limited (IRCON), through its 70:30 joint venture with SSNR Projects Pvt. Ltd. The contract is valued at Rs. 872.69 crore, with IRCON’s share amounting to Rs. 610.88 crore. The execution period is 40 months plus a 6-month Defect Liability Period (DLP).

Scope of Work:

The awarded project includes the construction of two main tunnels — Tunnel T1 (1.24 km) and Tunnel T2 (8.64 km) — along with open excavation and formation works on the approaches. Additional infrastructure includes escape tunnels, adits, cross passages, underground substations, slope stabilization, drainage, and access roads.

Tunnel Details:

  • Tunnel T1: From km 33+160 to km 34+400
  • Tunnel T2: From km 57+400 to km 66+040

Approach Portals:

  • T1 Portal 1: km 32+910 to 33+160
  • T1 Portal 2: km 34+400 to 34+650
  • T2 Portal 1: km 57+150 to 57+400
  • T2 Portal 2: km 66+040 to 66+490

Strategic Importance of the Project:

This project is part of the first phase of the electrified Broad Gauge (BG) rail link from Mangliyagaon (Indore) to Gadarwara (Jabalpur), aiming to boost regional connectivity. Passing through key towns like Chapda, Kannod, and Salkanpur, the 198 km rail line is designed for speeds up to 160 km/h and includes 30 stations (18 intermediate and 12 crossing).

Geographical & Technical Highlights:

  • The alignment runs through the Deccan Plateau and crosses steep Ghat sections before reaching the north bank of the Narmada Valley.
  • It spans the districts of Indore, Dewas, and Sehore, with strong highway connectivity via NH 47 and NH 146B.
  • The project includes tunnels totaling 9.88 km and viaducts of 9.945 km.

Conclusion:

This project marks a major step in strengthening India’s railway infrastructure by linking strategic regions in Madhya Pradesh. The IRCON-SSNR JV’s role in constructing complex tunnel sections and associated works is vital for ensuring the timely completion of this high-speed electrified rail corridor with modern engineering and safety standards.
