Indian Railways will acquire 40,000 coaches with improved interiors and upgraded facilities to provide world class experience to the passengers. This project will cost an expenditure of Rs 8,000 crore.

Further Details:

  1. The state-run transporter will also enhance the safety measures in its existing coaches through Centre Buffler Couplers (CBC).
  2. The Centre Buffler Couplers are strong enough to prevent capsizing during accidents.
  3. The new coaches will have better amenities, improved seating arrangement and bio-toilets. Every such coach will cost Rs 30 lakh.
  4. The Indian Railways is also mulling the idea of metro-styled self-propelled trains. One such train is already being manufactured at Integral Coach Factory in Chennai and the first two sets will be ready by March 2018. The trial runs will begin after that.
  5. “These self-propelled trains will be made in India. This will reduce the manufacturing cost to nearly half the cost of importing them from foreign countries. Apart from the passenger comfort, emphasis will be on safety of the trains while they run at high speed,” said a senior Railway official.
  6. “The train will have fully suspended traction motors, pneumatic secondary suspension and anti-roll bar. The brake system will be Electro Pneumatic, which will reduce the braking distance, so that full speed potential of the train can be harnessed.”
