The Golden Rock Workshop, Trichy is a pioneer workshop in wagon production in Indian Railways, which has manufactured more than 40,000 wagons with 55 varieties from the year 1962. This workshop is one of the 5 major Railway Workshops in Indian Railways (Jamalpur, Amritsar, Samastipur, Hubli and Goldenrock) and the only workshop in Southren Railway engaged in this activity. This workshop has carved a niche in the prototype manufacturing of new design wagons that, the prototypes of all new designs developed by Research Design and Standard Organisation/ Lucknow, will be manufactured at GOC owing to its superior quality & workmanship. In the past 20 years, the workshop has turned out more than 17 varieties of prototype wagons.
The Golden Rock Workshop has now bagged orders from Railway Board for manufacturing of Stainless steel BOXNHL wagons & Brake Vans (BVCM) for Indian Railways and from M/s. CONCOR/ New Delhi for manufacturing Container carrying wagons (BLL and BLCS). Out of the order for manufacturing 400 BLL wagons and 1140 BLCS wagon for M/s. CONCOR, the workshop is executing the order for manufacture of 400 Nos. of Long Container carrying wagons (BLL) worth Rs.132 crores. These wagons are modified with fitment of Twin pipe Air Brake system and RFID Tags.
Provision of Twin pipe Air Brake system will result into improved application and release of brakes and it would be easier for driver to control the train making safer operations. It will also reduce the drag on the train, resulting in to better fuel efficiency and reduced shuttling. Radio-frequency identification tags (RFID) are fitted for tracking of wagons to ensure effective & transparent functioning. The tag designed by the Centre for Railway Information System (CRIS) with a life span of 25 years. RFID uses electromagnetic fields to automatically identify and track tags attached to objects. The tags contain electronically-stored information. Passive tags collect energy from a nearby RFID reader’s interrogating radio waves. Unlike a barcode, the tag need not be within the line of sight of the reader, so it may be embedded in the tracked object. While the RFID tag will be fitted in the rolling stock, trackside readers will be installed at stations and key points along the tracks to read the tag from a distance of about two meters and transmit the wagon identity over a network to a central computer. In this way, each moving wagon can be identified and its movement tracked Using RFID devices, it will be easier for the railways to know the exact position of wagons, locomotives and coaches. Currently, such data is maintained manually, which leaves scope for errors.
Hereforth, it would be a standard practice for all new wagons turned out from GOC shops to be equipped with RFID tags.
Similar to BLC wagons, BLL wagons are formed in consist of 5 wagons and the BLL rakes are formed with 8 consist (40 wagons) as against 9 consist (45 wagons) in BLC type. These wagons are versatile in the sense that, it can be used to load both ISO Containers of length 20ft & 40ft and Domestic Containers of length 22ft, 24ft & 45ft whereas BLC wagons can handle only ISO containers.
On 31.07.2018, during a brief flag off function at Wagon Production shops, Central Workshops, Goldenrock, the senior most employee of Wagon Production Shops, Shri.O.K.Rajendran, flagged off the first rake of BLL wagons (out of the 400 BLL wagon order, which is the first rake among these type of wagon fitted with Twin pipe Air Brake system and RFID tag), in the presence of Shri. Abu Thakir, GGM/CONCOR/Southern Region, Shri. P.N.Jha, Chief Workshop Manager, Shri. P.Sivaraman, Dy.Chief Mechanical Engineer/ Carriage & Wagon and other officers and staff of this workshop.
