The new rail link connecting Masagram and Bankura-Bishnupur via Raynagar revolutionizes West Bengal’s transport infrastructure. Completed in 18 months by Eastern Railway’s Gati Shakti Unit, this project includes electronic interlocking, platform upgrades, and a 25 km shorter route to Bankura-Bishnupur. It promotes tourism, commerce, and faster travel across districts.
Infrastructure Development:
The project, sanctioned in February 2023, was executed by the Gati Shakti Unit (GSU) of Eastern Railway within just 18 months. The work included comprehensive engineering, signalling, and traction enhancements:
Engineering Works:
- 1.5 km of track linking completed.
- Eight new points inserted, with one point converted and another shifted.
- Dismantling of 300 metres of track and six points.
- Construction of a 600-metre-long platform and shed.
- Establishment of an Electronic Interlocking cabin and two huts at Masagram.
Signal & Telecommunications (S&T):
- Replacement of outdated panel interlocking with a modern electronic interlocking system.
- 119 routes and 50 track sections integrated for smoother operations.
Traction (TRD):
- Installation of 2,300 metres of overhead wires.
- Commissioning of isolators and transformers for improved flexibility and power distribution.
Tourism and Trade Impact
The new route reduces the distance to Bankura-Bishnupur by 25 km compared to the existing route via Kharagpur. This shorter, direct connection:
- Enhances accessibility to Bishnupur, renowned for its terracotta temples and historical significance, boosting tourism.
- Facilitates inter-district merchandise transport, fostering business development.
- Improves overall mobility with auto-signalling territory on the Howrah-Shaktigarh section.
Conclusion:
The newly commissioned Masagram to Bankura-Bishnupur rail connectivity exemplifies the transformative potential of well-planned infrastructure projects. By promoting tourism, enabling faster travel, and reducing journey times, it sets a benchmark in regional railway modernization and economic development.
