Delhi Metro’s Lajpat Nagar–Saket G Block corridor is set to become India’s first 3-coach metro line, offering a compact, cost-effective, and efficient transit solution. This 8 km corridor under phase-4 designed for short-distance commuters, aims to enhance last-mile connectivity with eight significant stations and seamless integration into the existing metro network.
A New Format for Efficient Commutes:
This metro line marks a shift from the traditional 4-, 6-, or 8-coach configurations. The new 3-coach model is tailored for manageable peak hour demand and offers faster turnaround times, higher operational efficiency, and reduced energy usage — making it both commuter-friendly and sustainable.
Passenger-Centric Design:
With a capacity of around 900 passengers per trip, the 3-coach configuration has been optimized for short intra-city commutes. Delhi Metro’s planning reflects a focus on comfort without unnecessary infrastructure oversizing.
Strategic Station Network:
- Lajpat Nagar (Interchange: Pink & Violet Lines)
- Andrews Ganj
- GK-1
- Chirag Delhi (Interchange: Magenta Line)
- Pushpa Bhawan
- Saket Court
- Pushpa Vihar
- Saket G Block (Interchange: Golden Line, Airport access)
These stations serve a mix of commercial zones, residential areas, and public institutions, ensuring optimal urban reach.
Scalable Infrastructure & Eco-Friendly Goals:
- Station box length is set at 74 meters, customized for 3-coach operations. As demand grows, frequency will be adjusted instead of train length, ensuring efficiency and sustainability.
- The corridor is projected to serve 60,000–80,000 passengers daily in 2025, scaling up to over 1.2 lakh by 2041.

DMRC signs MoU with Indian Railways:
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and Indian Railways have signed an MoU for the procurement of Automatic Wheel Profile Measurement Systems (AWPMS). These advanced systems will automate the wheel profiling process across four Indian Railways depots within 18 months, enhancing accuracy, safety, and operational efficiency by reducing human intervention in critical maintenance tasks.
This collaboration between DMRC and Indian Railways marks a significant step towards technology sharing and modernisation in Indian transport systems. With the successful deployment of AWPMS, both organisations aim to foster innovation, enhance reliability, and explore more partnerships that contribute to safer and smarter railway operations across the country.
Conclusion:
By pioneering India’s first 3-coach metro line, Delhi Metro is embracing smart, scalable, and sustainable urban mobility. The Lajpat Nagar–Saket G Block corridor stands as a model for targeted infrastructure that prioritizes commuter needs, connectivity, and operational efficiency—setting the stage for future innovations in India’s public transport landscape.
