Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC), one of the largest rail infrastructure projects in India, is marching towards fulfilling its objective of creating dedicated freight corridors and ushering in a paradigm shift in the freight and logistics sector in our nation. Demonstrating consistency in attaining its projected targets in completing various rail sections, DFCCIL completed yet another vital section, Sunday on 30.12.2018 DFCCIL achieved another milestone in construction phase by successfully launching trial run of freight train on Madar (in Rajasthan) to New Rewari to Kishangarh Balawas (in Haryana)section of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) on one of India’s busiest rail networks. This forms part of the first phase (Phase I) stretch of Western Corridor of DFCCIL.

This 306 route km section is provided with 9 newly built freight stations consisting of six crossing stations (Dabla, Bhagega, Sri Madhopur. Pachar Malikpur, Sakhun and Kishangarh) and three Junction stations (Rewari, Ateliand Phulera). The trial run of a freight train was formally inaugurated today at New Sakhun station on WDFC section in the presence of Shri. Anurag Sachan, MD, DFCCIL, Shri. D.S. Rana, Director/Infra, Shri. N.K. Shukla, Director/OP&BD, Smt. Saumya Mathur, DRM Jaipur/NWR and senior executives of Sozitz-L&T Consortium&Hitachi-Texmaco Consortium, besides senior officials from North Western Railway, DFCCIL and other stakeholders.

This section is located in Rewari and Mahendragarh districts of Haryana and Jaipur district of Rajasthan. The section contains 15 major bridgesand 271 minor bridges, fourRail Fly Overs (RFOs) and 177Road UnderBridges (RUBs).

Earlier, DFCCIL had completed the 194 Km section from Bhadan to Khurja (in Uttar Pradesh) of the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) on 30th November 2018.

Freight trains on DFCCIL will be capable for attaining speeds of 100 kmph as against the current maximum speed of 75 km/h on Indian Railway. The average speed of freight trains will also be increased from existing speed of 26 kmph on lines to 70 kmph on Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFC).

Highlights of the section:

Equipped for Heavy Haul train operation with 25 Ton axle load for the First Time in India (currently practiced only in USA, Canada, Brazil, Australia, China, Russia South-Africa and Sweden-Norway)⦁ Equipped for Double line electric (2 X 25 KV) track to undertake higher haulage at higher speeds with 7000 KW (9000 HP) CO-CO- 6 axle Locomotives. ⦁ Employed for the 1st time in India the latest “Automated New Track Construction (NTC)” machine with single day track laying capacity of1.5 km/day.⦁ Equipped with High rise Over Head Equipment (OHE) of 7.4 meter height (existing IR OHE 5.5 m) for double stack container movement on flat wagons⦁ Provision for Train Protection and Warning System (TPWS) for safe and efficient operation.⦁ Equipped for 4 aspect Automatic Colour light Signalingon the entire route with Inter Signal spacing of 2 kms. ⦁ Elimination of all Level crossings planned.⦁ Water Conservation through Rainwater harvesting in all the stations and RUBs (road under bridge)⦁ Recycling and Re-use – Construction materials and Waste management

Civil Engineering

25 ton axle loadsas compared to present 22.5 ton axle load on IR to facilitate transport of heavier cargo.⦁ Formation and Bridges are built for higher axle loads of 32.5 ton.⦁ Cant in turnout zone – For the first time in Indian Railways, to avoid change in rail plane, turnouts have been canted to ensure smooth riding and reduce rolling contact fatigue and also enhance speed on turn outs to 50 kmph as against existing 30 limit of kmph.⦁ Use of weldable crossings⦁ Head Hardened rail – This is to ensure longer life and lesser maintenance of tracks⦁ Long Flash But Welding Panels – Specially designed welded panels used to avoid field joints in rails⦁ CWR/ LWR through points and crossings – with enhancement of safety by avoiding free joint and reducing impact in turnout zone⦁ Friction buffer stop – better safety of trains

Electrical System

Computer Simulation Tool – to optimize rating of major equipment such as traction transformers⦁ SCADA and Protection System – State-of-the-art Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition (SCADA) system and numerical problem scheme to enhance safety of power system⦁ Superior composition and profiling of Contact and Catenary Wire with improved regulating Equipment⦁ Earthing and Bonding Strategy – Complying international standards so as to achieve desired human/ equipment safety as per EN-50122-1

Signalling and Telecommunication

  • Use of Clamp lock Point machines: These special machines secure the Turn out assembly for passing high speed and high load trains by locking the Switch and Stock rails. ⦁ Train Protection and Warning System (TPWS)–Automatic Train Protection System based on European Train Control System, Level-1 (ETCS L-1). This eliminates the SPAD (Signal Passing At Danger) cases.⦁ Train Management System – Train monitoring from a centralized location.⦁ GSM-RGlobal System for Mobile Communication for Railways to enable loco Pilot to communicate with the Controller from the Locomotive.
  • Partner in ‘Make in India’ Initiative of Government of India
  • The major equipment which are being used in the New Rewari – Madar (Ajmer) section such as transformers, auto-transformers, other conductors are part of the ‘Make in India’ program of Government of India.

About DFCCIL:

  • DFCCIL, a special purpose vehicle (SPV) is engaged in planning, construction, operation and maintenance of the Dedicated Freight Corridors and in the first phase, the two corridors, namely Eastern Corridor from Ludhiana to Dankuni (1856 Kms) and the Western Corridor from Dadri to JawaharLal Nehru Port (JNPT) (1504 Kms) are being constructed for exclusively movement of Goods Trains. The Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor from Ludhiana to Dankuni near Kolkata is traversing states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar,
  • Jharkhand and West Bengal. The Western Dedicated Freight corridor from Dadri (Uttar Pradesh) to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (Mumbai) is passing through Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra. The Western Corridors is being funded by Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA), while the Eastern Corridor from Mughalsarai to Ludhiana is being funded by the World Bank.
